Extremely dry scalp/cradle cap

Thread Starter
Ds (2 months) has a really dry forehead/eyebrows/eyelids and cradle cap on his head and I can't get rid of it. My mw said to put coconut oil or olive oil on it, so I've been alternating between the two. I'll put olive oil on, and when it softens I'll try to comb out the cradle cap. It'll look much better but the very next day, it will look like I haven't touched it or it will be even worse. So I'll try coconut oil, and again, it looks much better and then gets worse. Today he has some blood on his head and I'm not sure if I accidentally scratched him or if it is because of the dry skin.

Any suggestions of what I can do for this?

Hats?

I would keep up with the Olive oil or the Coconut oil. I also use the Weleda Calendula lotion which is pretty oily. My 4m old went through a period with very dry eyebrows and the Calendula really cleared it up.
I think they have the cradle cap until their body works out the oil secretion thing.

With my #1 I was very vigilant about the cradle cap. My #3 probably had a much worse case of it, but I really couldn't get it together to regularly comb it out (so I never did).
Having the cradle cap doesn't hurt them in any way, but the combing out has always bothered my dc.

My 4m always wears a hat, even indoors. It solves a lot of problems.

dd's cradle cap was no biggie. I oiled up her head one day and scrubbed it out in the bath and that was that.

ds, not so much! I probably scrubbed it off his head 4 or 5 times. It was soo thick and cakey! I even had strangers in the grocery store stopping with suggestions to get rid of it. It was HORRID. He was over 4 months when it finally went away. If you're breastfeeding, taking a fish oil supplement yourself can help. You might also consider food intolerances.

My sister uses the California Baby Calendula cream on her baby and loves it!
If you are not into buying organic products then I would suggest Cetaphil lotion as that is what I used on my own daughter before I switched to organic products and it worked wonders.

Take lots of Omega 3 fatty acids yourself, to make sure the babe is getting enough, especially DHA and EPA.

If it is red, raw, bleeding after you comb it out, you should stop combing it out.

I use Vitamin E oil and massage it in well...the rubbing helps. You can buy a nice big bottle of liquid vitamin E at a pharmacy, like Walgreen. My ds had it all in his eyebrows and stuff. After using the vitamin E oil, it softened to the point that it just rubbed off. His head also looks a lot better with the oil, but is still scaly.

I actually used olive oil, let it sit and then gently combed it out with a nit comb I had sitting around from years back when my daughter got lice. The nit comb was AWESOME! After that, when he gets some, I just gently brush it out with the soft baby brush and then after his bath, we give him massages with olive oil.

I've heard that taking biotin if you are breastfeeding can help.
