Pain in one breast suddenly at 16 months?

Over the past week or so it's been painful to nurse on the left side. At first I thought he was just getting lazy with his latch, but that's not it. No matter how well he's on there it feels like someone's stabbing my nipple and down into my breast every time he sucks. Today I just noticed that there's a small white dot in the middle of my nipple, and if I try to pick at it I get a vague sense of that pain I get when he nurses, so I think they're linked. WTH could this possibly be? Thrush? (oh please say no! And his mouth looks clear, and the pain is only on the one side). It's not mastitis, I've had that before. Any ideas?

Sounds like it might be a bleb or milk blister. Here's the information kellymom has on it. I get them from time to time, and I went in to see a lc about it. She said it's often associated with plugged ducts deeper in the breast, which I also get. I'm taking lecithin to prevent recurrences, and so far it seems to be working. Hot, moist compresses before nursing can get the bleb to open up, which will take care of most of the pain. You might also want to make sure your lo is still getting a good latch. Mine gets lazy, which I think might be part of the cause of my problems.

Hope that helps!
