It is pneumonia.
He ran a 104 temp last night and I took him in 1st thing this morning.
He has a fever, congestion, sick eyes, major cough.
They gave him antibiotics. I hope they work.
Also, when do I give probiotics...is it two hours after antibiotics?
My poor little guy, he seems so miserable.
Any words of advice?
thanks!

That's great that you listened to your instincts and took him in. He is in good hands with you. If the antibiotics don't work, they can prescribe a different one or maybe a z pack. I hope someone answers your questions about the probiotics. I think is like 2-3 hours after? And keep them up for a while. I did this last time I had antibiotics, and I didn't get yeast which I'm prone, too. It will be fine.

YOu might want to ask your dr about vitamin c with the antibiotics. I heard it helps them work faster. I read that in Raising a Vaccine Free Child. I forget what the exact mechanism was...extra white blood cells maybe?

sorry to hijack.. but ds has had the same symptoms as the pp since october- one night of a fever and then just a cough.. however, his cough is not bad- usually it's just occasionally during the day, and it has not slowed him down one bit. i put a humidifier in his room which has helped his nighttime coughing. however, during the day i still hear some rattling in his lungs. i can't get a drs appt until next month, but i'm wondering if this could be asthma? i don't know what to do. i've talked to dh about taking him off of sugar and gluten for awhile since i've suspected problems with those for awhile.. is there anything else i should do?

Could be asthma. Could be pneumonia (even without fever). Why no doctor until Jan? Is there any clinics you can do now? If it's asthma you need an inhaler or nebulizer to kick it. If it's pneumonia going on this long he likely needs meds.

For a cough that long, I can't believe they won't see him immediately! I would go to the er for that, not wait yet another month.

I would definitely try to take him in to a clinic or the er if you can't see the doctor- especially if you can hear it in his lungs! My DS has pneumonia and I only heard it if I pressed against him and listened really well.

Also, getting a handle on whatever is going on will help his immune system recover, especially since we are heading into winter and maybe another H1N1 spike.

Chest percussion's in the shower are working well for us. Sit and steam up the bathroom for 10 minutes and then lay child across your lap with upper body lowered (for drainage). Cup your hand and pound on their back for 5 mins. or so. 3-4 times a day is what we have been shooting for and it reallly helps to loosen stuff up.

Hope you get some answers and your little one heals quickly!

we just moved to this area and that's the earliest i can get an appointment with someone as a new patient.. i can look into clinics..

yeah, I would definitely look for something immediately if not last week. Lungs are nothing to mess around with- once they are damaged once, you are way more prone to chronic problems.

Ds has been slowly recovering from pneumonia and one symptom that has really stuck around- itchy eyes. I have been going nuts trying to figure out what it was. This morning I noticed red bumps on both feet and then some on his legs. I then found them on his wrists and faintly on his cheeks. I put aloe on them and decided to monitor them throughout the day. Around 7 I decided to call my girlfriend who is an ER doc and told her about his newest thing. She came over and thinks that is most likely measles. Supposedly the worst is over know that we are seeing the skin rashes? No, he has not had an MMR.
I am so tired of having a sick little one!
Mommas- advice or words of wisdom would be so appreciated- I am feeling so overwhelmed !
TIA

I'm sorry you guys are having such a rough time.

If it's any consolation, it doesn't sound like measles to me. The illness hasn't followed anything like the normal course for measles and the rash (speaking as a person who clearly remembers having measles as a child despite being vaccinated...back in the mid 70's) isn't something you have to search for. It's vivid and very apparent and spreads from the head down usually.

This picture is exactly what mine looked like, and this is what my sisters looked like...we had them at the same time. Me vax'd, her not.

As far as the rash being over the worst of it, my measles was relatively short lived, my sister was very sick and the rash was just the start of it

Bea-
you are correct, I believe the er doc misdiagnosed when she said measles. Whatever virus he had was nasty and stayed around A LONG TIME!
DS is doing a lot better, now he just has a cold with a nasty cough..lol.
Thanks for checking in and the support!

Oh the bugs!!

My step daughter's cough sounded like she should be permanently quarantined at your sons age. Between siblings and day care the poor girl got every bug going, backtoback. It was rough on everyone but mostly on her poor little self.

I'm so glad your son is doing better. I'll send positive thoughts to the universe for his continued improvement.

One day you'll look back on this whole episode and your left eye will only twitch a little bit

I want to read this whole thread, as I have had the cough too, but I don't have time now. I also believe it is a side effect of the new flu strain, probably passed off to me at the grocery store from someone that got one of those useless vaccines against it. Our family had the flu I am pretty sure, though we are all natural eaters and live naturally, so no one was particularly sick for long. Also no one else in the house seemed to have developed the cough I did. I did not have the flu when the others did, I only had a mild fever for one day and a headache. But this cough moved in and stayed for months. I saw an ND about it, but he was unable to hear it because it was as you say, the lungs sound ok except during a coughing fit... to stop the fits when I had them, I used a piece of taffy or a hard candy, anyhting with sugar or HFCS in it (bad I know, but I seriously thought I was gonna rupture a lung or crack ribs it was so bad) the taffy always made it go away. This makes me wonder several things. Could this be a side effect of candida instead? so I upped my use of probiotics and lessened my sugar intake/ cut out HFCS altogether. As for the Vitamin D, a good rule of thumb is 35 IU for every pound of body weight for use in dosing during times of health, increase it significantly if there is illness. Vitamin D is being shown to be the wonder drug that isnt even a drug... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--NqqB2nhBE there are lots more vit d vids from him and others too. for instance, in myself I take 4000 IU daily, but if I feel a germ, I take 6000 IU daily. DD1 is around 40 lbs, she gets 1400 IU daily, and I increase it to 3000 if any illness is around or if we went out to a playgroup that day.
I was using a canola oil based spread to cook with and on foods like potatoes rice etc. Then I heard in a natural forum that canola is dangerous for human consumption. I researched it http://www.bhawkindustries.com/blank...=0&prodstart=0 this comes up in a search... apparently canola oil is really from the rapeseed plant which is poisonous to humans and other animals. most canola products are also GMO. I cut it out entirely and my cough is gone. So, up the dosage of vitamin d, no HFCS and limited sugar, no dairy to lessen mucus, cut out canola, especially if it isnt from non gmo sources... this is how i got rid of the cough that i had for months.
