A few weeks ago, we got this book out of the library, along with the DVD. (Nice bonus... book comes with a DVD). So far, it's been helping. Basically it's a rewards only program... you give attention (very verbal enthusiastic praise plus touch (hug, high five)) for the behavior you want.... (also points on a chart)... and if the behavior isn't what you want, you just matter of fact say "I'm sorry, you're not going to earn any points because you didn't stay calm (or whatever.) Don't worry, I'm sure you'll have a chance to earn more points later."
He talks a lot about why punishment doesn't work... and basically says that if you really really really want to send your kid on time out, all of the research says it loses effectiveness after a few minutes. So, I think it's a good book for parents who think that harsher discipline is more effective. (Quite the opposite.)
The best part, IMHO, is the DVD. It's corny... and Dr. Kazdin either had a serious run-in with a tanning bed or has some sort of skin condition... but it was really effective in showing my DP what to do. (He won't sit down and read a book.)
Anyways... if anybody is dealing with a defiant kid, I recommend it.
Any other Kazdin users out there?
