New sewer gift?

In my family christmas grab I want to ask for something in the $50.00 range that will help me learn to sew- on a machine..
I'm thinking of looking for a used sewing machine. At first I want to hem curtains, make some duvets out of sheets and then small doll crafts like a sock monkey for children.
Any tips on books or video gifts you all could recommend?Thanks!!

If you are asking for gifts I would suggest a rotary cutter and cutting mat or some really good cutting shears or some vouchers for JoAnns or somewhere like that local to you, so that you can buy fabric, notions and patterns as you need or want them.
