I will be teaching a french class at our co-op for younger kids (5-9). Can anyone recommend a good curriculum or book for this setting?

Thanks.

Gosh, I can't. But, I remember taking a bit of French as a second grader and the teacher didn't use a "curriculum", but instead introduced us to lots of basic vocabulary (colors, numbers, body parts, etc) and basic phrases (my name is, hello, how are you, I am fine, good, bad, etc.,) and we did lots of songs.

Could you do something like that? Maybe a theme each week that includes vocabulary, song, and game. A little review built into each lesson.

With those age ranges that's what I'd do. There's such a disparity in writing and reading abilities that I'd stick to oral only.

I'm teaching French to my 5yo. But I couldn't find a curriculum for little kids that went any further than colors and words... nothing that was "functional". I started by saying something to him in French, then repeating it in English and then in French again. Eventually, I phased out the English unless he asks. So you could ask them "Comment t'appelles tu? What is your name? Comment t'appelles tu?" and eventually, they start to really "get" the French.

Don't forget songs and stories, too. You can find some of the more popular books--stories the kids know already--in French. We have "Bonsoir Lune"; L'Arc en ciel, le plus beau poisson; a few Dr. Suess books; and then a series that's really young age range, but English at the top of the page and French at the bottom (Bonne Nuit, Tout! and Je Suis Trop Gros come to mind--it's a series). So you could read the story to them in English until they "know" it and then in French.

You can buy a lot of it on Amazon (or Amazon France).

Thanks for the great suggestions! I was mostly planning on this, but wondering if there was some sort of book or workbook for those that are interested.

not really a curriculum but the Teach me french tapes(spanish, hebrew, italian, chinese, german) are really good musical cd's with familar kid songs redone in the language they are targeting.
