5mo pregnant, nursing a 24mo, and terrible blisters

Hello ladies,

I've been all over the internet, and I've discussed it with my midwives, and I'm still rather stumped. DS is turning two tomorrow, and still nursing about once a day. I'm 5mo pregnant with #2. I also go to school full-time and work part-time, to the tune of about 60 hours/week out of the house. And I have terrible, terrible blisters on my nipples.

I cannot express any milk to put on my nipples, which is what I've done every time in the last two years I've started to get any soreness like this. DS just got over a terrible yeast-related diaper rash that we had to treat with a prescription cream (seriously, after a month he was still bleeding and I'd had enough). My nipples don't show any signs of thrush, but my midwives talked about treating for thrush anyways with yogurt and pro-biotics, I just haven't had the chance to purchase those things yet.

It may be partially latch, specifically de-latching, but I don't know how to address that. I say "big mouth" when he gets on, but even when he opens his mouth to de-latch (sometimes he just pulls off) I still see the blister getting worse.

HELP ME LADIES. I'm totally lost. And in pain. I don't want to wean over this, but I don't know what else to do.

Does your son get fever blisters? My son does, and now I have one that has appeared on my left nipple - once. It concerns me to think of nursing another little one and what I can safely do to keep it from coming back if/when we do have another baby.

I don't know what to tell you, but I just wanted to give you a because I know how you feel. I am 6 mos pregnant, with a 22 month old nursing DS, and one of my nipples seems to have cracks that just won't heal. I will not nurse on that side for a while until it seems to have healed (no apparent cracks, normal coloring/feel) and then nurse once and it's cracked open all over again. Then it gets bright red (kind of like thrush) and then peals as it heals back up. I'm going to talk to my midwife about it in a few days to see what she thinks. Incidentally, we as a whole family seem to battle thrush/yeast overgrowth. My DD has battled sore bottoms since she was born, and last Christmas both of my children (both nursing) had thrush in their mouths for quite a while. So, I don't know if this is just some residual stuff from that or not (the cracks originally appeared when they had thrush in their mouths and I got it on my nipples, but then once they healed it didn't bother me until I got pregnant).

Sorry to hijack, I just wanted to say I feel for you. I'll be checking to see if anyone else has any ideas.

No fever blisters. and I have blisters on BOTH nipples. The right one cracked and is now scabbed over, and the left one is HUGE. I wish I could take pictures and post them without violating the TOS.

Could your son be teething? We're heading into our 3rd or 4th week of recurrent blisters and I think they're related to his eye teeth trying to come in. The only things that seem to help minimize the pain is lots and lots of lanolin (sometimes even right before he nurses so it helps lubricate the friction) and compressing my breast until it alleviates some of the pain. Good luck!
