CAN you let LO go bare bottomed a bit to really dry it out? Or is that not an option?

Also, I wonder if infant probiotics would help prevent it from returning. I know it would help in a regular girly-parts yeast outbreak. I'm thinkin' "why wouldn't it be any different for the rest of the area", but I'm not sure...

My son used to get horrible yeast-type diaper rashes. SO horrible that we eventually had to take him to a dermatologist. What was happening was the rash was so raw and open that the nystatin wasn’t able to work properly. Any bit of wetness/dirtiness caused the rash to continue to be irritated (ie bloody, icky…), the doctor told us to coat with nystatin then SMEAR with a zinc oxide diaper cream (we use Desitin). The thick (THICK) layer of zinc oxide cream provided a barrier against the pee and poo and eventually the rash healed.

Oh, the doctor also told us to never use diaper wipes, only wet cloths for dirty diapers and nothing for wet ones. And, to not wipe off the cream (she said, “avoid taking it down to the skin”)… only add additional cream with each change.

Good luck. I know it can be rough.

Are you using cloth dipes at all? It can be tough to get the yeast out of the dipes and a relapse is pretty common if the dipes haven't been seriously sanitized.

Other than that... are you sure it's yeast? Some diaper rashes (like Impetigo) need different treatments or even abx. This Dr Sears page has some good info on that.

Sun on the bum is good, you can sprinkle probiotic powder on your nipples before breastfeeding and some mamas sprinkle it on the bum as well (there are vegan/non dairy probiotics just for infants), rinsing the bum and patting/blowing dry with each diaper change, checking your diet for possible allergens, etc... they can all help. Oh, and you may want to try something like the diaper rash soap by Earth Mama Angel Baby... my dd2 gets bad rashes (sometimes bleeding) but hates pastes. So we use the soap, calendula and "skin scrape soothing" oils, and the really "light" diaper creams if she'll let us.

But if nothing seems to help and a long trip looms, maybe check with your care provider just to see what can be done to make your little one more comfy?

Thanks. I have zinc cream I can apply over the nystatin. I tried mixing them but that didn't work. I would give her probiotics, I don't know what to get. I need to work on getting rid of her thrush, I got some GSE for that. I didn't realize it could spread through her digestive system like that.

I found some miconazole powder but reading the back of it now, I see it has something in it called acrylamide, which is known to cause cancer (california warning). I'm a little worried about putting this on dd because of that. Letting her go bare-bottomed is hard because of the cold and because she poops/pees so much (newborn).

I battled with this last week. We CD, and through all the creams I was putting on DS, my diapers stopped absorbing, plus I'm pretty sure the diapers had yeast in them, because the nystatin would take the rash away, then one diaper without cream, the rash would return. Our solution? switched DS to sposies, applied a thick layer of nystatin, with a thick layer of zinc oxide over it. Frequent diaper changes, and I stripped the cloth diapers with boiling water & dawn to kill the yeast and get rid of all the creams. I didn't put DS back in cloth until the rash was totally gone for about 24 hours.

Also, I am trying to give DS more yogurt to prevent more of these rashes.

I think what caused it for us was the extra sugar I ate around Halloween causing him to have more sugar in his system, causing an overgrowth of yeast. Plus, we used to eat yogurt a lot, but we ran out, and I make our yogurt, so I was lazy about making more. So, we went from a regular diet of yogurt to a regular diet of sugar! lol

We use Nature's Way primadophilus childrens. It's vegan and can be mixed with liquids (if you'd rather mix it with expressed milk or something so you can better control the dose).

I forgot to mention, I've used breastmilk on dipe rash too.

Nekkid bum time... maybe just for a while after a bath? Perhaps heat a small space (the bathroom? a bedroom?) or put on a hat/sweater/baby legs so it really is just the bum area exposed? You can even lay them on a towel and cover them with a soft/light blanket... open air and a sunbeam are best, but a soft blanket is still more fresh air than they'd have otherwise.

With DS (and the dds when they were little) I use a folded towel, topped with a few prefolds or blankets as a sort of nekkid tummy time. If he lets loose with pee/poo I grab the top layer and toss it in the wash. He's 3mo now and I don't get soaked as much anymore, but it does happen!

Magic Butt Cream worked wonders for us when plain Nystatin stopped working for our son. If I recall correctly, it has Nystatin, Mylanta, and Desitin.

How do you get yeast out of cloth dipes?

Check over in diapering for really detailed info and ideas, but I generally strip/boil them and then sun bleach them. But a relapse of the rash means it wasn't done well enough, and seriously, it's hard to get yeast out of cloth!
