My seven-month old, like many other babies, used to be a great sleeper (2-hr naps and 7-hr stretch at night) and then slowly changed his ways. Over the last 3 months, he has developed a trend of waking 40 minutes into his sleep, whether it's a nap or nighttime. And when I say 40 minutes, I mean literally, 40 minutes after I set him down. Every single time. I am wondering, first, what is going on in his sleep cycle to cause him to rouse at precisely 40 minutes each time and second, what I can do to interrupt this disruption and help him sleep for longer than 40 minutes at a stretch. Currently, when he wakes, I am sometimes able to get him back down by rocking for 3-5 minutes; otherwise, it's nursing. Even his morning nap, which he seems to need, is interrupted with the 40 minute wake-up, and then I rock him back down for...you guessed it, 40 minutes more! The only change to this is when, occasionally, he sleeps for 1 hr 20 minutes (so, double 40!) between 10 pm and 2 am.
I have observed his sleeping and waking (we cosleep part of each night) and it seems unremarkable. No snoring, gasping, unusual moving around...What could be going on?

sleep deprivation is rough. Hope you find ways to get some rest soon. For me this was cosleeping, napping with DS, and DH takes him in the morning while he is getting ready for work and letting me sleep in a little longer.
