Creme Caramel Bread Pudding--Egg bread vs. White bread

I want to make a bread pudding for Xmas morning brunch but have never done it. I saw the recipe for Creme Caramel Bread Pudding in Bon Appetit and I like it because I can 'see' how it works--it makes sense to me.

BUT it calls for egg bread. Do you think I could use white bread?

I totally think you could use white bread. I imagine egg bread was suggested because it's really thick and hearty. I would suggest finding a white bread that's really "heavy" - it should work fine.

Personally I wouldn't use white bread, if you mean something soft like Wonder... it's liable to be a bit mushy and lack in texture. I'd go with just about any other kind of bread though. Even a mixture of different breads. I used to work in a restaurant that made their famous bread pudding out of the day-old pastries from the coffee shop (danishes, doughnuts, etc.).

Thanks mommas. I actually don't like egg bread BUT I think Brioche might be okay (which is kind of a contradiction, I know) so I might try that.
