Spelling Program Needed Badly, Help Please

I need a really good spelling program that will allow my daughter to apply it to real life. She will be 8 in Feb. and is in 2nd grade. She loves to come up with stories and write things. The problem is that she is starting to get frustrated that others can not read her work and sometimes she can not even read what she has written. The only true works that she know is the, and, I, a, is.

We currently are using Explode the Code, which she truely loves. She does wonderful work in the workbook, but then as she tried to apply it to free writting, it is gone. She can't remember how to write it. This has been a problem since kindergarten. She attended PS until Fed. of last year. I just really do not want to have to get her tested for some sort of learning problem so early on. I would really like to give it my all in helping her.

We are using Sing, Spell, Read and Write without the daily spelling test, as the words are too advanced. She is finally starting to read pretty well. It has taken her a long time to just grasp the idea and concepts of reading. Currently she is a straight phonic reader and is just starting to really grasp vowels and work families.

Can you recommend a Spelling program for us to try?

We had good luck with Sequential Spelling from AVKO. I think they have an online version now. It builds on word families - so you might start with something like 'pin' and move quickly to 'begin' and on to 'beginner'.

We have Making Spelling Sense. My dd didn't like it because it was too slow. I think it would have been better to start it in 2nd grade. It starts with cvc words and progresses from that. They explain the phonics associated with each list and have some fun activities (word searches etc) for each list. Focuses on spelling by breaking down each syllable. It is supposed to be a good method to use with dyslexic children according to one list I read. I got it used off of amazon for like 5 bucks. I am saving it to use with my 7 yr old who is most likely dyslexic.

We use Sequential Spelling for my 7yo and I love it. Instead of focusing on memorizing words, it really teaches HOW to spell words you don't know. My son's ability to decode words has improved so well and he can figure out spellings to so many words now!

Another vote here for Sequential Spelling! I bought the ebook version and downloaded it instantly. You can download the first 8 lessons, as I recall, as a try-before-you-buy.

We like Sequential Spelling as well.

Spelling City is a resource a lot of our friends use with great joy. (www.spellingcity.com )
