nightime info for newbie

I am BRAND new to cd. Dd is about a week old and I didn't cd until her cord came off, which was today. As soon as it did, I put a prefold and cover on her. When I changed it 2 hours later, though, it was soaked through and through and her legs and bottom were all red. It was obviously too long. I let her air out and it looked better.

At night, though, she has been sleeping 3-4 hour stretches between feedings, and I change her at those times. In order to cd, do I need to wake her up every hour or two (or have her wake up every hour or two) in order to change her and avoid a rash or burns???

maybe get some fleece to lay in there so her bum is drier? or maybe some cd safe diaper cream (we use burts bees)? it will act as a barrier between her skin and the wet prefold. my dd was like this, and grew out of it so there is hope!

I lay a fleece liner in there for my little guy at night and use earth mama angel baby bottom balm as a barrier. We usually use a pf (snappied) with a bamboo wipe as a doubler and the fleece liner. Sometimes with a wool cover, otherwise a Thirsties Duo wrap.

I think some babies can also be sensitive to certain detergent, particularly when they mix with urine. What kind of detergent are you using for your dipes?

I used Country Save to prep them, and this was the first time the dipe had been used. That's the only really cd "approved" detergent to be had in this city. I also have All F&C, which appears debatable, depending on who you ask. I wasn't brave enough to try cd last night. I thought I'd thought of everything, so I was pretty bummed with my very first attempt yesterday. Not giving up, though.

I have some doublers and fleece liners that I can try, though. I have some Balmex that I'd read was okay for cd - no fish oils but with the zinc oxide (?). I have some wool which I'd intended for nighttime, as well as some Thirsties and Proraps. Geez - with all those layers, her newborn bottom is going to be huge! Time for bigger pyjamas, Baby!

I double up or use the next size up prefold for DS at night. He goes about 9-10 hours that way and has never had a rash issue. And, yes, his nightime diaper is huge, lol!
