Sad - weaning DD

DD is 21 months, and has been nursing just before bed and in the morning for a long time. It's sweet, I love the snuggle time together.

However, I'm pregnant again (only 7 weeks), and the nausea was getting unbearable, so I decided to take Unisom last night, which means no nursing DD this morning. I know some folks say it's fine, but I'm just not willing to start pumping her full of antihistimines.

The Unisom helped a lot - I didn't wake up sick during the night, and I was not sick this morning. A blessing. But, it means probably no more nursing DD :-( I'm sad to be saying farewell to this stage of our relationship...she did not seem too bent out of shape about it this morning, but it still makes me sad.

I'm sure the unisom is long gone by morning. Did you check to see how long it's in your system?

(am assuming that you do not want to wean).

Surely if it's safe for a fetus it's safe for a nursling?

But either way, great job nursing your DD for 21 months! And congrats on the new pregnancy!

Dr. Hale lists it as an L4, meaning the benefits should outweigh the risks. However, the risks of this medication apply to "infants and premature and term neonates" because of the risk of sedation. A 21 month old is no longer an infant, imo.

The half life of the medication is 10 hours. Is there an alternative if you don't feel comfortable with the minimal amount in the milk and the age of the child? Rescue Remedy Sleep aid? Kellymom lists ambien as an aap approved med and it's an L3 according to Dr. Hale.

Thanks for the suggestions. I have a call in to my ob about Unisom/breastfeeding. No, I don't want to wean DD - but I am expecting that I will have to be taking something for several weeks (Unisom, or a prescription med) since i had reached a non-functioning level of nausea. I don't really want to pass much of any med on to her, not for an extended period of time.

And on the embryo/nursling thing - I don't know. My little nursling is a full-on person...I know how much unisom affects me, and I would hate to put her through that for no reason. The embryo, well, I don't know enough about development in the pre-placental phase as far as how it would be affected. Can a growing embryo get sleepy? Does it impact long-term outlook for developing allergies? I don't know!

I'm going to ask my doc what the safest possible anti-nausea med is for both pregnancy and breastfeeding, and take it from there. If we have to wean, we have to wean...DD really didn't seem to mind this morning, and she goes to sleep on her own just fine, so....
