Mending Leather?

My husband has a leather jacket that has a gradually worsening tear parallel to a seam in the side. We took it to a shoe repair shop, but the repair was shoddy and didn't last. Any pointers?? Do I need special thread? Should I apply a patch or just sew up the tear??

I * think * it has 2 b glued 2gether.
I would phone lots of repair shops 2 get different opinions.

A hobby leatherworker may be able to sew it up for you. If you have a Tandy store nearby, the would be able to put you in touch with someone who could fix it. You might also check with local high end or independent fabric stores.
