DS's new inhaling noise is disturbing

Over the weekend, DS came up with a new noise. It's like a high pitched hooting noise while he inhales. The first time he did it I thought he was choking but turned to see a happy playing baby. If I distract him or pick him up/put him down when he is doing it he will stop, so I think it's just a new noise that he is testing out.... but it is still very unnerving to DH and me. He did it when he woke up for a feeding in the middle of the night last night and it startled me so much that I had trouble going back to sleep for the rest of the night.

YES!!! DS did this for a while. At first I reacted like you did: Fear. I got to where I could recognize "the noise" from "something's wrong" and I realized that if I ignored it he didn't do it as often.

Pretty sure it's just a new noise he realized he can make.

It's probably just one of those baby quirks, but I would be inclined to mention it to my pediatrician if I were you. Some conditions, like laryngomalacia, often get suddenly worse (thus symptomatic with audible stridor) around 3-4 months of age. That particular condition is one that babies generally outgrow without any trouble, but it is my understanding that in the meantime they are somewhat more susceptible to respiratory infection that your 'average' babe.

Probably an irrelevant long shot, but I would just get it checked.

My son likes to make this noise, too, especially when he's playing around with a bunch of new-to-him sounds. Sometimes making it cracks him up.

LOL -- Katie made this noise too! She still does it when she gets very excited! She's on to growling mostly but she did that inhaling squeal for a bit.

He has already moved on to other things, though he makes the noise every once in awhile. I'll mention it the doctor at his appoinment next week just in case, but I think he's just playing
