Blow outs

My dd is 6 wks, we use prefolds and thirstie covers. She is having one large bm a day, as well as many little ones. The large one does not stay contained in diaper, although the cover does hold it all in.
Is this normal (we did not cd with ds)? Am I folding them wrong? I am doing the newspaper fold, she is roughly 12lbs in GM yellow's.

I'm sure you're folding just fine. The trick to keeping the blow outs in is the fitted elastic around the legs. That is one of the reasons I switched to sewing my own RRPs and using the prefolds as the absorbant layer. I was tired of rinsing my covers

I never figured out how to keep poop from ending up all over the cover, as long as it's not out of the cover & all over the clothes I consider it a success!

Yup, it's normal - and yay that the cover is doing its job!

This is my favorite fold: the jelly roll fold.

Good luck! Yay for babies!

It's a really awful phase both my kids went through, and in talking to other moms I think they all do it. It DOES end! Until it did, I just made sure to carry TWO extra changes of clothes for DB, instead of my normal one.

I second the Jelly Roll fold. I use an angel wing w/jelly roll for my MO (mini one), and it works very well. But, yes if only one cover per day is getting soiled it's that's not too bad!

We've found that if we snappi the prefold, the poo is contained in the diaper and doesn't get on the cover.

But, it's a pain to use a snappi and we have enough covers on hand that we generally don't snappi and just swap out covers when they get poo on them.

So yup, it's not just you, it's totally normal!

I used to do the angel wing fold (w/o the front folded down) on DD. W/ practice I did not get any poop on her covers. Just made it a little tighter than it looked like it needed to be & made sure the legs were nice & tight.

I used the newspaper fold with my DD also. And we had this same problem of poop exploding into the cover until someone gave me this tip...

On step 4 in this newpaper fold how-to, make sure you overlap the prefold right up the baby's butt crack. It creates a really tight fold with little leg gussets that will catch the poop! (We also always used a snappi, otherwise the prefold wouldn't hold poop in at all.)

I too like the Jelly Roll fold...from personal experience and discussions with others blowouts seem to be pretty normal. Just keep extra covers and a change of clothes just in case

I use prefolds with BSWWs & Thirsties on my 7 week old daughter, this is not my 1st CD baby, she has more than one poop cover a day. I think you're fine.
