Particles floating in the amniotic fluid?

I am planning a homebirth and seeing a midwife. I saw an OB for the first trimester and had an ultrasound there at 11 weeks and they said everything looks great.

At 17 weeks we decided to get a 2d ultrasound at a fetal photo place because my DH really wanted to know the gender, and my homebirth midwife doesn't do ultrasounds.

The baby is active and everything seems normal, but there were particles floating in the amniotic fluid. Of course I had to google it, and now I'm freaking out a little.

You can see the floating stuff in this picture, clearly.

Has anyone else seen particles like that on an ultrasound? Should I go back to an OB and have another scan there? I haven't had any bleeding or cramps, and my general check-ups with the midwife are all normal...but what I've read about floaty particles in the second trimester is completely scaring me!

I didn't find anything with a google search saying it was bad. Some on lung maturity, others saying it was vernix floating around nothing bad.

I'd say go see OB just to make sure all is well.

This is from a journal. http://www.jultrasoundmed.org/cgi/co...stract/13/2/95

I did find one article mentioning ancephaly but you would have noticed that on the ultrasound.... and the tech doing it would have pointed you to your OB as well.

Hi pepper44,

How did it turn out. Me and my wive are having the same situations and the gyneacoligists don't really know what it is.

I would ask your midwife to send you to get a standard ultrasound!
