I made my own by grinding the rice up really fine in my Magic Bullet (knockoff), until it looks like flour. I imagine you could use a food processor, but I don't have one.
It was hard to get it fine enough at the very beginning for my ds1, so I did use store bought cereal at first. I started him on solids at 4 months on the rec. of our ped, but with ds2 I"m going to wait until at least 6 mo. I think, so he may tolerate the thicker food a bit better.
Anyhow, I started with rice, but later did barley (this is very hard and took longer to process) and oats as well. Later I'd mix them all together! I think I cooked it approx 1/4 cup grain with 1 cup water. I'm just going from memory here, so hopefully that's right. Anyway, the oats were easiest to get really fine.
My doc (a different one) is big on coconut oil for LO's, so I always mix a teaspoon in while the cereal was cooking. I also use liquid vits for ds1, so I still mix that in his cereal and some probiotics once it's cooled off. Sometiems I mix in hemp powder for extra protein and fiber. My dh thinks I'm goofy, but I sneak in as much healthy stuff as I can.
Of course, intro one food at a time and watch for allergies, etc etc. That was important for us because ds1 has a lot of food allergies. Anyway, that's just how I did it.
