Kindle....got one?

Does any one here have a Kindle? I'm thinking about getting one for Christmas and I think I'd like to have one. I have an extensive library in my home and I love it but it would be nice not to have to carry a book around with me when I want to read.

So If you have a Kindle do you like it? What DON'T you like about it? If you hate it, why?

At first it seemed to me the total antithesis of the book experience, but the practicality of it is what got me hooked.

My husband is growling at the price tag and the downloads but......I really, really want one.

I didn't think I'd like it, but I LOVE mine! There are tons of free books out there too from various sights.

I love that now I can travel without lugging many big books with me, I love that I can sit next to my dd while she plays and read on the kindle because it doesn't make noise like turning pages does. I am so happy with it!

Amazon's customer service is wonderful, too. I've had mine for less than a month and it's cracking a bit in the cover so they're overnighting me a new one and new cover at no additonal cost!

There are quite a few free books as well as ones under $5 -- to ease your DH's cost concerns

I like the looks of the Barnes and Noble Nook because it has a colored touch screen.

My DH keeps researching different ones to get me, but I really like my real books! And I live in Canada, so we don't get all the cool features you guys do.

Me too! I'm getting a Nook for x-mas. After drooling over the kindle for ages, I was all set to finally get one this year. But after looking into the nook, I decided to go that route. I like the lending feature, since I can totally see my MIL wanted one after she sees mine. I also like that they have gone with a more popular format, as opposed to amazon's proprietary one. I can't wait!

I didn't even know about the Nook....it has a lending feature? Like a library? OH. I see you can laon them to your friends by sending them to their Nooks or whatever. That's kewl. I just checked out the Nook vs. Kindle.....I more than likely will get the Nook.

The thing about the Kindle 2 is that when your battery fails, it cannot be replaced....you have to get a new one. That's kind of sucky you know. But I REALLY like the "text to voice" feature of the Kindle.

The Nook won't be out untill January....but I think it might be a better deal anyway....

Now I am more confused than ever. :0

Nook lending feature doesn't interest me because you can only lend a book once. It is for a two week period and you cannot read the book in that time period either. You can then never lend that book again.

Also, B&N ebook store is more expensive than Amazon Kindle Store.

Things I like about my Kindle:
-small and compact
-good button placement
-able to mark and make notes
-put cursor on a word and get the definition
-web browser
-text to speech feature to listen to books in car while I drive to work
-can read many books at once
-don't have to carry around large nonfic books
-tons of free content (see free books thread at mobile read forum)

I would make folders for organization if I had one kindle improvement wish

I love my Kindle. That said, I would probably have loved a Nook just as much. It's seriously cool that the options are increasing.

I've been interested in getting a Kindle, so just joining in. In researching, I found out that there is a Kindle App for the iPhone and iTouch on iTunes (that's free) that allows you to read Kindle books on your iPhone and iTouch. So, if you've already got one of those, you don't need to shell out for a Kindle.

yeah i have heard about those apps that some mamas here have talked about.

for me the kindle was a seven day wonder.

i love every aspect of it. i use it sometimes.

but nowadays i notice i still prefer books to the kindle.

however i love having the kindle when i go on trips and dont usually have to lug books along.

also most of my reading is non fiction so its not that easy finding what i REALLY want on kindle and i am not willing to wait for them to put it on at my request.

so no you will never go wrong with the kindle. however it wont really replace books.

I have one. I think what I like the most about it is the ability to buy some book I'd probably be embarrassed to buy in a store, and you can just download it right then and there and start reading.

The thing I like least about it is that I tend to lose it as often as I lose my regular books (I have this bad habit of carrying them around and putting them down who knows where). I wish it had a locator thing on it!

I also have the Kindle app for my iPhone. I was hesitant about downloading that at first, because my husband had already bought the Kindle, and the idea that he paid money for something I could get for free bugged me. Plus I figured the backlighting would annoy me, and that part of what I liked about the Kindle was the low contrast. However, I can turn down the brightness on my iPhone, or turn it up if I'm reading in bed at night. The biggest issue with the iPhone Kindle reader is that the battery doesn't last nearly as long as it does on the Kindle. I ended up registering my iPhone to my husband's Amazon account, and my Kindle to mine. So I can read his books on my iPhone. I read the entire Sookie Stackhouse series on my iPhone.

Love, love, love my Kindle.

No, really, I love it.

Mine is the Kindle 1 and I've had it for about 2 years or so.

Ya'll brought up some great points......I doubt I'd down load the app for the Kindle (if I got a Kindle.....I hate the idea of reading a whole book on my i-phone). I have been researching the Nook a lot. The one thing that attracts me to the Nook is that the battery can be changed, which isn't the case with the Kindle 2....although it can be done for the Kindle 1.

The Nook has a touch screen, you can expand the memory, and can use PDF files with it too.....but the Kindle has the text to speech attraction, but only if the publisher of the book allows it to be used.

And then there is the availability issue......the Nook won't be shipped until Jan 11.

So.....I am still on the fence.....

Please tell me more about why you like your Kindle or why you hate it. Nobody has said anything about NOT liking the Kindle so that's a huge plus too.

Kindle just did an update. You now have native PDF support and the battery life is increased A LOT. (you can read with wireless on for 2 weeks now!)

Sony makes an e-reader, too.

I have the Kindle DX (the big one) and ***love love love it*** ! It is so convenient to have 100 different books at your fingertips. It supports PDF (though I haven't tried that yet) and fits in my briefcase, though not in a purse which would be a nice feature on the smaller ones, but I like the screen space. I love that I can "highlight" passages I want to save later or look up words immediately. I love the instant downloads and the free books. (Though beware, due to said free books I got hooked on 3 new series and have purchased about a dozen books so far that I otherwise would not have ...which is good and bad at the same time...)

What I don't like - there is no way to organize it! I wish I could have a folder system like on a computer so I can organize by genre or author. I wish it was easier to see which books I have already read or not.

I love the cover I got. It can stand up like an easel so it is super convenient when pumping or nursing.

I am so glad I got it (it was a gift). I still read books, but the transition is seamless to actual book and kindle. I have actually found myself wanting to highlight things in the actual book (which I would NEVER EVER do ) but then realize I am reading a book and not the kindle.

It is a double edge sword as well the ease of downloading. Great to get books so fast - wayyyy easy to overspend and not realize how many books you purchased at one time.

I'm getting a DX for Christmas !!!! It *should* be waiting for me when I get home, I'm so excited!!! I thought about the Nook, but after reading that article I'm glad I went with the Kindle. Though the whole "if your battery dies you're screwed" situation does scare the bejeepers out of me. DH kept pestering me to go with the Sony Reader instead since he could get it at Staples but I didn't want to have to hook up to a computer every time I wanted a new book. Now all I have to decide is which book to get first...

I got one for Christmas last year and LOVE it! I have the original one, and when it dies I'll buy another one. I love it for all the reasons mentioned above and plus it comes with Amazon customer service, which in my experience has been awesome. I'm actually on my third kindle. The first one started having screen issues after about 3 months. They sent me another one, overnight! Had similar issues with the replacement, again got another one the next day. They give you 30 days to return the damaged one with no charge, postage paid. I think my screen issues were a fluke as I don't know anyone else who's had these problems, but I was impressed with how quickly they resolved it.

I went on a Lampoon's style vacation last March that was made much more bearable thanks to my Kindle. I was able to check motel ratings, car repair places, restaurants, etc. from my Kindle when my friends were unable to get Wi-Fi on their laptops. Plus, when I ran out of good reads, I could just download another at a whim.
