Sweaty pillows

My DH's head sweats at night. His pillows become really disgusting. When I try to wash them, they get lumpy and are basically ruined. I don't like to keep replacing pillows - it seems wasteful. Is there any type or brand of pillow I can buy that can survive washing, or any way to wash pillows that won't make them lumpy ? I feel I need to really wash them, not just soak them, to get it all out...

Thanks !

Have you tried using a dryer ball with them in the dryer to pound them back into fluffiness?

The pillow stuff moves around and makes lumps. They are still fluffy, just lumpy.....

You could buy a couple of pillow protectors to put under the pillowcase (more than one so you can keep washing them). I found some that are like terry cloth on top and some sort of vinyl or plastic underneath so the pillows stay clean no matter what happens to the cover. My dd1 went through a phase when she was small, that every time she vomited it was right onto her pillow... the covers worked amazing and her nice pillows are still nice, and she has never found them to be too warm.

I had to wash DS pillow the other day and happened to see that they had directions on it (not sure if I've never noticed or if this is a new tag?)

I put the pillow in the sink and got it completely wet and squeezed out all the air - then washed like I normally would. And tumble dried it on low.

It came out good as new and not at all lumpy

good luck!

This is what I use as well, but mine are cotton on the outside and have a thin vinyl lager that is on the inside to protect the pillow. My DH is bald and has some serious oily scalp issues that make his pillow pretty nasty. The pillow protectors are wonderful!

Well, I'm in Canada, but I just bought them in the linen section of a department store... I'm sure you wouldn't have trouble finding them.

I bought two pillows at the dreaded walmart and two at ikea---the ikea ones are not bunching up at all in the wash (down alternative), but, you guessed it...the walmart ones are lumpity lumpity.

Yep, cheaper pillows are actually more prone to become lumpy. Nicer pillows will stay nice. It has to do with what they're filled with, but I don't know the details. Of course, you probably don't want to experiment with expensive pillows, so that makes it kind of hard to figure out.

I bought an expensive, natural wool filled pillow for dh hoping that would help. It didn't.

They did suggest that I leave it in the sun outside to help with smell. I keep meaning to do this but never think of it when I'm sure it's not going to rain.

I made pillowcases out of towels. They absorb moisture and have the added benefit of maintaining a cool feeling. Before the terrycloth pillowcases I was constantly flipping my pillow to get to the cool side.
