we have a fairly limited music collection. dd's favorite is Vivaldi's Four Seasons, and i am a big fan of Bach, too (e.g. Brandenburg concertos). i am not a big fan of the Romantic composers. (for me, they are ok only if i am watching a ballet at the same time.) i'd say Baroque is #1. i also really, really enjoy the music you hear in Elizabethan era films

anyone have recommendations for increasing our repertoire? i welcome favorite recordings as well as stations i might be able to listen to online.

thanks!

the first thing I think of from your description is Handel. Try the Concerti Grossi! I just love them. I think we have the Trevor Pinnock recordings, not sure. There's also a nice recording by Hesperian XX called Elizabethan Consort Music, with pieces by assorted composers on period instruments.

I'm a lover of all things Beethoven, doesn't matter what it is...

Beethoven - 9 Symphonies (the Ninth is by far my fav); Emporer piano concerto; for a mix check out the Immortal Beloved soundtrack; Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58

Handel - Water Music; Concerto grosso in B-flat major, Op. 3, No. 2

If you like Bach you might enjoy Mendelssohn as he was the one who ressurected Bach's music in Germany long long ago.

Mozart Violin Concerto No. 5 in A Major

If you really like the string portions of the Four Seasons, Stravinsky would also be someone to look into.

Holst - The Planets

And here's Seattle's King FM classical station that can be listed to online: http://www.king.org/

Oh, and I have a question -- I love the Four Seasons too, but the recording I have is Michala Petri playing recorder, and while I love the Four Seasons I'm not so sure I love the recorder.

What's your favorite Four Seasons on CD?

I have two recordings of it, both of which I love, of course I can only find one of them at the moment... it's one done by Gil Shaham and Orpheus.

Have you heard of the website Pandora.com? You can type in any musician, song, or composer and it will play songs that you'll probably like. You have give each song a thumbs up or a thumbs down to help the site figure out your taste. It's a great way to find new music.

I have the Boston Camerata's Christmas music on all 6 of the CDs that my car takes You might like the Renaissance one (there's one song on there that I don't like, but the rest is awesome) as it's the Elizabethian type of music, but my favorite is the Medieval one.

I could be prejudiced cuz I played many of these but I love Mozart's horn concertos. Look for anything with Dale Clevenger playing.
