Rant!!

Okay I think this is the right place to post this. This may seem crazy that I am allowing this nonsense to occupy space in my brain but usually writing it down helps so here goes.....
The other night I was watching tv after lo went to bed and I saw a commercial that had a woman(of course)leaning over a counter peeling potatoes as if it was the hardest job in the world, and then you hear the voice over saying something about the dredgery of making homemade mashed potatoes. So then cut to the freezer where the now happy woman takes out a box with cut and peeled potatoes pops them in the microwave adds butter and milk and presto mashed potatoes "just like homemade". Now right after that commercial another commercial came on for I think Gerber baby foods and it stated that their commercial baby food in plastic containers was "as good as fresh fruits and veggies".
Now I had to refrain from throwing something at the tv. Does this bother anyone else that these companies have the nerve to tell us we are to busy to make mashed potatoes and that an overcooked/processed/artificially vitamin fortified baby food served in a platic container is as good as fresh fruits and veggies?? That our own health and our childrens health isn't worth an hour out of our day to prepare a meal for our families? I am outraged!!

I sat here and at that mashed potato commercial the other day. Like it's SOOOO difficult. I made mash in under 10 the other day. Not difficult at all.

I think it's sad that we (north american society) don't place importance on doing household tasks lovingly. Instead we are bombarded with the idea that cooking/cleaning/etc is drudgery and not worth the effort and that the easy way out is just $$$ away.

Sigh... now I'm ranting.

No, it doesn't bother me a bit. But it bothers me that people believe it.

The whole instant/frozen mashed potato thing has always bugged me. I've lived in Idaho my entire life, we make real mashed potatoes here! Then, I find out the vast majority of people I know actually buy instant mashed potatoes.

But yeah, those commercials about how busy moms are and how they really should be buying instant whatever annoy me. And that people totally fall for it just baffles me.

yes it bothers me. Gerber especially gets to me. "you obsess about your babys tummy...we obsess about what goes in it..." is that why they make vanilla pudding? I saw the potato commercial. Its a joke. There are a ton of "steam in a bag" things these days. I cringe thinking of all the horrible toxins that are melting into the food when it's cooked like that.
My friend pulled out a magazine the other day that had a "sunny d breakfast" add taking up a whole page. It literally shows a mom handing her child a "sunny d breakfast" juice box. Apparantly the "sunny d breakfast" has vitamins and minerals that start your child off healthy for the day.

It seems it would be really expensive that way too. Potatos are relatively cheap considering how many meals you can make with a bag of them. I'm assuming frozen potatos would only last one meal and cost the same as buying a huge bag of fresh.

Those bake-in-the bag things give me the willies! I bought a loaf of garlic bread the other day and it said to bake it IN THE BAG!! I was like umm.. no, and pulled it out and baked it like normal - they have the same things for making a turkey/ham in the oven, and they just totally wig me out!

But yeah, mashed potatoes are one of those things that I've never made But, if I ever do I'm sure I'll make them from ACTUAL potatoes - peeling potatoes is NOT hard!!!

peeling potatoes for mashed potatos? not unless I'm being really fancy.

Seriously though, its pathetic. Mashed potatos are fast to make, and the idea that commercial baby food that is CANNED in PLASTIC could be as nutritious as food made with fresh fruits and veggies and meat, and LOVE, is just rediculous.

you know what commercial I HATED? that "meet the buttertons" commercial. Drove me nuts. Seriously? your hydrogenated gmo oil is better than natural, nutrient rich butter? I don't think so!

You can freeze potatoes? I hate peeling them, I'm totally going to try this. *slinks off because she knows you were ranting about people like me*
