Reading help...

First, let me say although I have two children, 8 and 9, who are homeschooled I've never taught a child how to read. At one point I was doing K12 phonics with my dd, but it was a setback and we didn't use it for long. Both children picked up reading on their own and are wonderfully fluent readers.

Now, my daughter's best friend, who is also our neighbor is in 3rd grade in public school. She has come to me before asking for advice because she can't read. I talked to her and let her know I think she should talk to her mom and teacher about this. I offered loan of any of our books so that her and her mom could work together, as they don't have any books and she says her mom doesn't take them to the library. Today she came to me again asking for my help. Her mom isn't helping her. She's too embarrassed to go to her teacher. I'm not really sure what to do. I asked her if she'd had her eyes checked recently and she said yes. I also asked her about reading or writing things backwards and she said she didn't except for sometimes her fives. I am willing to try to help her. I suggested again she borrow books for her and her mother to work with. I also suggested she ask her mother work with her with flash cards. I honestly don't think she will though. So what should I do, where do I begin if I'm going to help her? I'm thinking first I'll need to find out where she is exactly in her progress, but how? Should we do phonics and sight words? I'm guessing this was already done in school and I'm just not sure why she is slipping through the cracks. Will more of the same even help her? Its staring to affect her other school work and I can't understand why the teacher hasn't noticed and started getting her the extra help she needs. Any book suggestions for me?

http://www.thephonicspage.org/ Is a free site with printable pages, a reading test to place her, and videos to watch with lessons. How great that you are thinking about helping this little girl- the sooner she's caught up the better the rest of her school experience will be!
