So after much experimentation and tears (the baby cried some too) I've found a way to wear my 5-week-old in the Moby that he likes... but it's not any of the "official" carries and I'm worried about his airway/spine/etc.
Basically the only way he gets comfy is in a cross between the newborn hug hold and the cradle hold. Another way to describe it is the hug hold turned sideways. He's sitting in the Moby, bum on the left, feet on the right, head basically straight up from bum. He's in a sitting position. Like I said, he seems happy with it, and I can actually do things like go to the bathroom and eat lunch (and type!) two-handed.
My concern: His chin is sort of tucked into his chest. It's not being forced down -- he has plenty of room to stretch his head back if he wants to. But when I try to stretch him out, he doesn't like it one bit. Also his head is sort of cocked to the side, toward my body. It doesn't look comfortable to me, but again, when I try to straighten him out he protests.
The main reason he's positioned this way is that he really does not like having his head tucked behind the fabric. He doesn't have neck/head control yet, but he doesn't care -- he wants that head out there, and at least one arm too. When he's asleep I can pull the fabric up slightly to support his head while still leaving his face and arms free, which he tolerates.
So should I just be happy that we found a position that works, and not worry? Or keep trying to make it look like the pictures in the little instruction booklet?
