meconium plug?

My kids are no longer babies, but I've wondered off and on for years about my eldest son's birth, and can't really find any satisfactory answers just by doing online searches and reading, so I thought someone here might know something.

Long story short: I was induced at 42 weeks gestation (my dates were absolutely correct). My cervix was long and closed, and they treated me with a prostaglandin gel for about six hours before starting the Pitocin, which ran into me for about 24 more hours. The labor didn't progress....I never got past 4 cm. Baby showed no signs of distress, but I was 100% wiped out after all that Pitocin and caved in to a c-section. His APGAR was 8 and 9.

After a time (I was foggy from excessive blood loss and medication), I was informed that baby was running a fever and had not passed his meconium. I don't remember when it finally passed....possibly his second day of life? But when he finally passed his meconium, it was a plug. His fever immediately dropped and he was interested in nursing. There was a big scare about the plug....they wanted to do a sweat test of some sort to rule out cystic fibrosis, but ultimately decided that he was fine and did no further testing.

This was almost 18 years ago, but to this day I wonder what caused that plug and the fever. Any ideas? Oddly, I also had a huge amount of amniotic fluid for being post-dates. Dunno if there's any correlation there.

I am quite surprised that he didn't pass it in utero being 42 wks induction and fetal distress. He had a mighty strong Mucus plug that served it's purpose to keep it in until after birth. He just had a little more time for it to really work it's magic. I have see some plugs that are super long and mucousy almost like a firmer cervical mucous plug. I understand the lack of desire to nurse. He had lots of Mec in his bowels and not much room for anything else. The fever may not have been totally related to the bowels. Babies are very environmental in regards to temp so if you have a fever or he is wrapped up too much temps can be high. When they are faced with infection usually they have a problem maintaining their temps. Not to be too nosy but was he circ'd? If yes did they use local? I am not sure if it is the local or the procedure itself but most babies I care for post-circ have higher temps. Glad he is OK 18yrs later but certainly makes you wonder.

No, he isn't circed. And he didn't experience any fetal distress that was detectable by all the monitoring. I was induced solely for being post-dates and for no other reason. The c-section was done because of maternal distress, not fetal distress.

I've never seen a cervical mucous plug, so I can only imagine what it must be like.

Sorry I just read it back and you said no distress. I thought you were saying he was in distress. Not sure why his temp was so high but yeah for another boy with his foreskin!!!
