Did you allow Newborn Screening? - Page 2

We agreed to it because it's an actual diagnostic, (instead of probability test), and many of the conditions it tests can be treated pretty easily if detected early on. We're doing a homebirth and midwives do it after my milk comes in and the baby is passing normal stools to check to see how the milk is being metabolized.

Great timing for this thread. Just got back from a m/w appointment and she asked whether we wanted eye goop (nope), Vit K (undecided but now I read this I realize that lots of people decline!) and newborn testing. I was leaning towards the testing (there's an outside chance that we have a CF gene in the family and it does screen for that) and it sounds like fellow MDCers have similar ideas. I will check to see when they usually run the test - I'm sure they'll do it while DD is nursing, but maybe better to wait till a follow-up visit.

We had two homebirths and declined everything for our girls, including the PKU. I'm trying to remember what my midwife said about it orginally which encouraged me to be comfortable doing so (but obvioulsy, DH and I made the final decision ), but it's not coming to mind! Anyway, would I decline the PKU another time? I'm not sure. I think I've decided to do more research if there's ever another next time.
