Please Air Your Dirty Laundry!

So, I'm excited to use cloth diapers, but trying to figure out a balance between having a nice-looking way to store dirty diapers for a couple of days versus a functional solution that keeps the stink down. Yes, function matters quite a bit more than aesthetics, but it never hurts to ask right... What solution do you have that still keeps a nursery cute (or whatever your space for storing diapers/changing the baby may be) but smelling on the right side of the trash? I'm debating picking up a brushed nickel trash can with the foot opener thing and lining it with a wet bag since this seems like an option that might work. Any suggestions/experiences welcome!

I don't keep any dirty diapers in the nursery. I did that before and even with a diaper champ, I could still smell it.

We have a bathroom right off of the nursery and it never gets used. That bathroom is where the diaper pail is kept. I just use a plastic pail with a lid that has a clamp on either side. I used to use a wet bag, but it ended up being more trouble than it was worth. I just clamp the lid down and close the door to the bathroom.

I wouldn't go with a foot opener can. My boys think any trash can with a foot opener is way too much fun.

Hmmmm good point, this might not be an issue for me right away, but down the road I could see how fun it could be!

We use an empty cat litter bucket (not pretty, I know, but goes with our personal reuse green policy ) in the bathroom. I wouldn't keep the bucket anywhere else because I spray the poopy dipes in the toilet. We keep the lid loose so an ammonia smell doesn't build up. The dipes are washed every day or every other day. I breastfeed and haven't noticed an offensive odor coming from the bucket, but that might change once he starts eating solids

I use a basic foot Rubbermaid pedal plastic trash can/hamper with a liner. I've had the container for a number of years and have used it for many purposes. So far, I haven't had trouble with smell, but the lid isn't tight and I wash diapers about every other day. I don't have a problem with my boys playing with the foot pedal. It seems to be the one thing my three year old actually leaves alone. LOL

I use a plastic trash can (like this one) with a Happy Tushies pail liner in it. I have 2 liners, each time I do diaper laundry I just toss the pail liner in the wash also and put in the spare.

I just use a flip top garbage pail and it works fine. My 2 yo never messes with it, so you might do just fine with your pretty garbage pail. I'll probably go that route when it comes time to replace the pails I have (because I have 2 in dipes and one has big boy poo, I keep a pail for pee diapers in their bedroom and another one for poopy diapers in the laundry room/bathroom).

I found we had far fewer odors when we didn't cover the wet diapers at all. With the covered pail, we had horrible amonia stink whenever the pail needed to be opened after a diaper change, and that took a while to dissipate. With the uncovered pail, I'd just sprinkle a little baking soda on the diapers after adding a new one, and the room didn't smell bad at all. The diaper pail was in my own bedroom (where the baby slept) so I would have noticed if it got too stinky!

As an added bonus, we didn't need to use detergent- by the time the diaper pail was full, I'd already sprinkled in even more baking soda than was needed to use AS detergent for that size load of diapers.

We use a regular trash can with a flip/latch top and a wet bag for the liner. No issues with stink and we keep in the bedroom right now.

In reality, you want the pail in the bathroom b/c that is where the sprayer is and that is where you wash your hands. Easiest is to get a kitchen size trash can and don't use the lid or keep it cracked. Spraying off all poopy diapers and letting the pail air out is the key to no smell.

I have a Planet Wise bag on the back of the bathroom door.

I use a stainless steel foot-pedal trash can. It looks great and it works perfectly. In the beginning I lined the bucket with cloth liner bags that I'd sewn out of a breathable waterproof fabric but eventually I decided that they were more trouble than they were worth. Now I just throw the diapers into the bucket part of the pail and take the whole bucket (it has a handle and can be taken out of the stainless steel can part) down to the laundry room. I rinse the bucket out with TTO and hot water when I do laundry. I find that this system works really well. There is no stink at all and it is very easy.

My little guy is starting to get interested in playing with the pedal but it's not a problem. We keep the trash can in the nursery. We part time EC so rarely have poopy diapers and I don't find it a big deal to walk down the hall with the occasional diaper that has been rinsed in the toilet. Until your LO is on solids, this won't matter anyway so you've got time to figure it out.

My advice is to go with what you think will work for you and what you like the look of, but be prepared to make adjustments once you get into the swing of things. You may need to move the pail to the bathroom and you may need a different type of container evenutally, but you have to start somewhere in order to find out!

I believe this is the route I'm going to go! Thanks for everyone's opinions!

I also have the Planet Wise zippered wet bag on the back of the door. The zipping and unzipping is slightly annoying but it keeps the stink in.

FWIW I don't recommend the Planet Wise brand - I also have a travel-size Leslie's Boutique bag and that is better quality (keeps stink in even more effectively, and the zipper is more conveniently directed wrt the hanging loop).

An open pail works best for us.

We use a SS trashcan w/ foot pedal and pail liner in the 'nursery' as OP described. Its worked great so far, but BM poos dont stink so we'll see when we get to solids...

We bought a rectangular stainless steel Simple Human step / lid trash can in our nursery. It cost about a hundred dollars, but we wanted it to look nice. We also use a black wet bag to line it so it's hardly noticeable.

Ooooohhh... very sharp looking! I think my DH might fall over if I suggest a $100 trash can though I like that it has the charcoal pad. Our countertop food scrap can has that pad as well and there is never any stink coming from it until you open the top. Now if I can find a good deal on it... I'll look into their other can options too.

We'll also only be dealing with BM poop for quite awhile so that should help. My DH wasn't too excited about one wet bag we have because the seams are sealed. I havne't spent a ton of time comparing wet bags but apparently I need to add the seam issue to my check list!

Our laundry room opens up to our garage too. The laundry room isn't much of a room but rather a hallway. I don't think DH will go for keeping the diapers in the garage though, mostly because there's no good place for a can - freezer then storage cabinet to the left of the door and water heater and furnace to the right. It's looking like the bathroom or nursery is where it'll rest.

Continued thanks for your ideas!
