Alberta Birthing Laws?

Can anybody point me towards what laws we have here, what doctors think they "have" to do during the birth and to the baby? I have looked around the net but haven't found anything. I am going to be having my first Dr. appointment in less than 2 weeks (well, the second one but we won't go into the uselessness of the first) and I want to be as well-informed as possible and know what I have to ask her about (ie will she force the following... on me).
Thanks

I think it all depends on your care provider. A friend of mine birthed her twins at a hospital in Edmonton without epidural, etc (any paid meds). She also exclusivelly breast fed them. So I think there are lots of options available in that area.

What do you want your birth to be like? Ask your doctor about those things are feel him/her out with their responses. Not sure if there are midwives in Alberta, but for some reason I am thinking that there are.

From personal experience, I've had two epidural hospital births and one midwife hospital drug - free birth. The midwife experience was exceptional. My doctor wasn't a bad doctor, I just feel that a doctor will be more likely to perform medical interventions when it may not be needed.

try this

http://www.canlii.ca/eliisa/search.d...urisdiction=ca

I'm not terribly good at searching this site (www.canlii.ca) but ALL provincial and federal laws, decisions and appeals can be found here. I put in 'pregnancy medical care' and got nearly 400 hits (looking in Alberta and federally) - one of them is bound to tell you waht you need. I'm sorry that I can't be more specific, pointing you to the correct act, but the information should be here somewhere. I'm curious to see what you find, though I suspect that there are more limitations in the Doctor's code of conduct than in actual law.

Send me a pm with who your dr is and where you are planning on delivering and I can give you some info if I know anything. (I am a L&D nurse in Edmonton)
