This is sort of weird, but my next door neighbor's cat has suddenly decided that rather than living with my next door neighbor, she now lives with me. Apparently the neighbor's new dog has made the house an inhospitable place for the cat. And honestly, she's always looked a bit hungry for both food and attention, though the neighbor is a really nice lady.
The thing is that I just rehomed my German Shepherd this summer. I became a single mama to a toddler, I work a pretty demanding job, and I just couldn't handle a young shepherd. The house was constantly caked with mud and dog hair, she scratched up the doors, and I knew I wasn't able to give her nearly the attention and exercise and stimulation she needed. I found a really good home for her and knew it was the right thing to do, but I still felt sooooo guilty. In the couple months since then, I've missed her a little, but honestly, it's been a huge relief having her gone. And I set a rule that I wasn't allowed to have any pets because I didn't think I could take care of them properly.
And then a couple weeks ago this darling cat starts wandering into my house looking for food and affection (the fact that I gave her a bowl of milk or two may have had something to do with it). She's the prettiest little thing. She's very petite and dainty, with a white coat with gray and brown marking. She might be a year or two old? She is so chill, and so affectionate. She pretty much just wants to curl up in your lap and lie there. It's been really pleasant having a kitty in my lap as I've been working on my computer or reading a book. I've had annoying cats before, but she's no bother at all.
My 22 month old DS is mad about animals, and he is obsessed with this cat. Every morning when he wakes up he's immediately asking, "Where's the kitty?" and he fusses if he can't find her. He's actually really good with her, very sweet and gentle, and she's so tolerant of him. I love watching how much he enjoys her.
Anyway, this weekend I bought a bag of kitty food and talked to the neighbor. I mentioned she'd been hanging out at my house and said I was willing to adopt her. The neighbor just kind of laughed and we didn't finalize anything.
But lately every single day when I get home, she runs up to my car and follows me inside the house. Seriously, she greets me the way that a dog would. She's spent the last few nights over here. I've been putting her outside during the day when I'm at work, and haven't needed a litter box. She's pretty much just decided that this is her home now. She's been chilling out in my lap the whole time that I've been typing.
So does my resolution to not adopt any more animals count if it's actually the animal that adopted me? I said I didn't want and couldn't handle a pet, but she's seriously the most laid back and affectionate cat I've ever met, and I'm really enjoying having her as part of my little family. Did the perfect cat just wander in my door?
I think I'll name her Sukie.
