How many straight hours does your l/o sleep at night before waking? Do they have a routine down yet?

usually 4, with a few scattered lucky nights of 7-8 and hoping it's a trend.

On a typical night, she sleeps about 4.5 hours, wakes up to nurse, then wakes up every 2-3 hours after that. We cosleep, so I just latch her on and fall back asleep.

Usually 3 is his limit, but he's gone longer on occasion. The night he slept for 5 was shocking.

But it's the nights like last night when he's up every 90 minutes that make me want to scream.

Nothing consistent. Let's see... Last sunday was 6 hours, monday was about 4 and then every 2 hours. Tuesday's long stretch was only 3 and then every 2. Wed was about the same, last night was 6 hours and then 3 hours.

Our big "problem" is that she is now treating her 8 or 9 PM bedtime as a nap, sleeping an hour or so and not going back down until 11 or 12. I can't sleep in too late because my 5 year old is up, so I am trying to figure out how I am going to change that. I guess it's time to start the bedtime routine. Right now, it's jammies and swaddle blanket, and we may be upstairs or down and watching TV. Haven't paid attention to dimming lights. I just like to be able to unwind and watch TV.

I don't know how to answer the poll. Every night is a new adventure. Never know how long she'll sleep or whrther she will be in the cosleeper or our bed.

The cosleeper is now detached from the bed with all sides up like a regular bassinet. I put it about 1 inch from the bed so it isn't touching and I have the babysense V monitor in there which clinks when it detects movement (breathing). So I sleep the best when she is in there. I know the alarm will sound if she stops breathing and when she is in my bed, I keep an LED flashlight on so I can see her and make sure she is OK. I wake a lot to check on her and make sure my blanket is still far enough away from her.

Its so interesting that so many babies have their longest sleep that first time - and then its 2-3hrs again.

Oban always goes 4-5hrs, then a 2-3, and another 2-3 till we wake up between 6a-8a.

The nursing session that falls around 4am (the one before we wake up for good) - is always dodgey getting him to go back to sleep; whereas the feed around 12-1am he almost always goes back down without a fight. The hardest time for me is around 3-4am with him. I am usually SO tired at this point - and not wanting to deal with him - or even nurse him for that matter. I also sorta fight him waking at 3am and then at 6am - (because im not ready!) by shhhing and putting the pacifier in his mouth a few times...which usually works and i can buy myself another half hour or so! lol. almost always its GAS or needing to poop that wakes him because he GRUNTS himself awake.

i am also getting better at nursing him without having to turn on the nightlight - which helps keep him sleepy for when i have to reswaddle him (i unswaddle to nurse him - it never felt right to me to nurse while he was swaddled...seemed so awkward!!).

i really think the sound machine is key.

Kai sleeps for at least 10 hours at night, wakes up, nurses and sleeps for another 2-3 hours. He started sleeping 6-7 hours straight at two weeks. My oldest did the same thing though.

I had the same thought exactly. My DD will have the biggest chunk of time when first going down and then wakes every 2-3 hrs after that.

Only in the past week it's gone up to 4-5 hours. Before that, it was 2-3 hours.

If I'm lucky, she'll go 3-4 hours uninterrupted. Nurses, then is up to nurse every 2-2.5 hours after that. She'll be 12wks on Monday, but was born 3 weeks early.

I'm making the mistake of putting the binky back in her mouth every time she spits it out and cries. Gonna have to stop doing that soon before I make us all very misearable for months to come.

You'd think I'd have learned by now NOT to.....did it with DD#2 and DS. There came a time when I had to let them spit it out and cry for it when they got older until they figured out how to grab it themselves and pop it back in. It got to the point where I was up every 15-30 min to replace the binky. Not good for either one of us. SOOOO tempting to do when you're really sleep deprived, though.

His first chunk is always at least 3 hours, sometimes 4-5, and once was even 6 hours! After that, though, it's usually every 2 hours.

The trick for us is to get him sleeping alone...he sleeps not just in our bed, but in the crook of my arm. I can give him to daddy, but again he has to be in daddy's arms. He will sleep alone during the day for short naps, but he's always on his tummy, and it's not safe to be on his tummy in our bed. So I'm still trying to figure out what to do about this...

For now this is working though.

Mine is the same. Exactly. I've learned it's best not to mention this to other mums, or at least to look apologetic or sheepish if I have to. :P And to point out that she subsequently naps very little during the day so it's hard to get stuff done (but I'm not complaining).

Apparently I was exactly the same way as a baby.

Ethan goes about 6 hours now, then back to 2-4. The problem is that he wants to go to bed at 6:30 pm. I wake him up to feed him around 8 or 9 (which I swore I'd never do), and then he sleeps til 3:30-ish. Sometimes he goes right back to bed, sometimes he wants to play. He goes back to bed within 45 minutes to an hour of waking though. Then he's up at about 6:30 or 7 and wants to stay up.

I'd really like for him to go to bed at about 8:30, then I can nurse him when I get home from work at 11, and he'd hopefully get up for good at 8:30 am. We're working on slowly adjusting his bedtime... But if we can't, I can live with what we've got.

don't feel bad. I think its great! My oldest slept through the night by 3 mos old, my second never did sleep thru the night until closer to a year old and DD now is somewhere in between. All babies are different, that's for sure.

Hmmm I don't know if I should be jealous of others or happy with our night!

Sophia will not sleep more than three hours at a time, once in a blue moon I might get 3.5 or almost 4 hours uninteruppted. The part I like about Sophia's routing is how late we sleep in.

She starts her night sleeping between 9:30 and 10:30 waking, as I said, every three hours or two, until 9:30 the next morning. Lets me sleep in and catch up without taking a nap during the day and I also can stay up late and get enough sleep!

We are in the same boat! Not the belly sleeping part, although I haven't worried too much about that either. Sophia will not sleep without me. Oh we do have one good nap in the afternoon for 2-3 hours that she does on her own but that is it!

He typically naps from 8-9p, wakes up and nurses. Then stays awake until around 11ish when he nurses again and then goes to sleep between 11:30p-12a, and then typically wakes up sometime between 8-9a.

(uhhh... yes I realize I'm VERY lucky! -- he's been on this routine for over 3 weeks now, his nights are progressively getting longer too)
