Christian Christmas Kids Books?

I have found tons of Hanukkah books that explain all about the background and meaning of Hanukkah. But Christmas books that I find seem to all be about Santa and presents. In our effort to make the holidays be about the true meanings instead of the materialism that seems to dominate the holidays, I would love some Christian Christmas book recommendations that our almost 6 yr old would enjoy.

Thanks

Maybe you're looking in the wrong places? Even our small local library has several Nativity-centered picture books for children.

I guarantee you'll find some at christianbook.com. I'm pretty sure Max Lucado has one or more story-of-Christmas books out, so you could start your search with his name.

One that we enjoyed this year was a book I got for review, which is "God Gave us Christmas" by Lisa Tawn Bergren. The little bear in the story asks her Mama "Who invented Christmas? Was it Santa?" and the mama bear takes her little one on a journey to show her God's love and ends at a nativity scene and explains about the birth of Jesus. And the illustrations in that one are *gorgeous*.

This year, my 2.75yo and I have been enjoying (in addition to the more secular titles):

What Star Is This by Joseph Slate
This Is the Stable by Cynthia Cotten
A Child Is Born by Margaret Wise Brown
We Were There by Eve Bunting

When I was about that age, we had the book "Do you see what I see?" based on the song - or maybe the song was based on the book. We talked a lot about what all the symbols meant to the Christmas story. That might be interesting enough for your 6yo, but simple enough for your little one.

There are so many wonderful children's Christmas books out there but I was particularly struck by this book:

The book is The Christmas Story from the King James Version, illustrated by Gennady Spirin.

The paintings of Spirin are incredibly beautiful and they are perfectly juxtaposed against the poetic KJV text.

My 6 year old was left saying, at the end of this short book, "But Mommy ... I want to hear more!"
