Creating a Child and Pet Friendly Home

We spend a lot of time worrying about how to protect our children from dangers in our homes, but I am wondering what people have done, or plan on doing, to protect their homes from children! And pets - pets are bad too.

Life was different pre-kids. Back then I chose things because they were pretty. But now that we have a young toddler, a home daycare, and two big dogs I am starting to change things out and getting the most durable choices possible!

I have leather furniture in my living room, that is left over from my single days. But I am grateful for it as it has survived having a pen eaten on it (from the dog), crayon drawn on it, and being peed on (ick!). So leather is definitely a good choice.

We have hardwood floors throughout our main level that includes our main bedrooms. I loved it when we moved in, but now I hate it. It needs refinishing, and I am seriously considering laying a vinyl plank flooring over top of it instead. It is way more scratch resistant, easy to clean, and it will snap together without adhesive so if we sell this place a future owner can pull it up to restore the wood if they so desire.

I also really need to paint. We have flat eggshell everywhere and after being scrubbed of fingerprints, crayon and dog-dirt umpteen times it is looking pretty ragged. I am not thrilled at the idea of a high gloss paint, but I am not sure what else to do.

So what have you done? Is it possible to have a house that is both child and pet proof, and pretty??

Definitely read Make Your House Do the Housework by Don Aslett .

I say let your hardwood get a "patina of age" . That's what we're doing around here. Trashed natural materials look so much better than trashed plastic. And you know the vinyl will get trashed too, right?

A surprisingly child-friendly surface that I have is an IKEA couch with a white fun-fur slipcover. Crazy huh? It washes really, really well and never looks rumply or wrinkled. Plus it's really cozy .

Our walls are in rough shape. I think I'll just resign myself to yearly touchups in high traffic areas rather than making the surface more child-resistant.

Sherwin Williams, and I think Ben Moore too, have really nice, very washable paint in flat and semi gloss. I have used it all over my home and it does wash pretty well.

Can you poly the wood floors for now? You can always refinish completely at a later time. We chose to do slate in the mudroom/hallway because we live rurally, have animals, and needed a super durable flooring.

At this point, my furniture is all basics-good quality, but covered in highly resistant kid/animal fabric, like very heavy cotton duck. I don't want to be crazy over "stuff"-I value my time with my kids too much.

Rugs instead of carpets. Carpet is a no-no. Rugs can be picked up and washed (or beaten outside!) or more easily replaced.

You can still have pretty decorative items, just hang them on the walls or display up high on shelves.

Slipcovers on sofas are great. Throw pillows with removable covers. Etc.

If it's not easily washable it doesn't come into this house. Whether it is clothing, pillows, decorations, etc. - I'm terrible at getting things clean again so if I can't throw it into the washer I don't want the hassle.

We also have found leather to be fabulous for pets & kids. I keep my curtains just the length of our windows (although I love floor length curtains!) to cut down on the fur collection.

I agree with pp I wouldn't put vinyl over the wood. Who cares if the wood gets scratched - you can refinish it at a later date if you wish. Put vinyl over it & not only are introducing toxic chemicals into your home you're making more work for yourself in the long run when it needs to be removed to redo the wood. It wouldn't be any easier to clean & imo scratched wood looks better over vinyl any day.

IDK, we have hardwood floors and I love'm - grew up on them, and IMO they're super easy to keep clean - just vacume them and mop once in a long while (I last mopped when we moved back in... 3 yrs ago ). Really easy And spills are SO much easier than carpet - no staining to worry about!!!. We do have area rugs in both our main rooms for a little bit extra padding for playing on, but I just vaccume them when I vacume everything else... I've been thinking about flipping them over for about a year now, but erm... it hasn't happend. Someday!!
