a 5 MONTH old...

i think ds is weaning

or, rather, day-weaning

it seems like he doesnt drink so much anymore. i'm nursing less, and hes taking less formula. he wants real food. rice, bread, meat, fruits, veggies, etc. he grunt cries until he gets real food, and sometimes refuses the breast/bottle in preference for real food. so we feed him the real food. and he cries if we decide he's had enough real food, and is only satisfied when HE decides to be.

i think i've found the other side of CLW

is this a problem that needs to be rectified, or should i go along with what he wants?

I'm no expert, but it sounds like a breastfeeding strike to me. I'd keep offering the breast and maybe pump to keep your supply up. It's possible when the novelty of real food wears off he'll be back to breastfeeding. 5 months is VERY young to be weaning. You could also offer pumped milk in a sippy cup so that's he's still getting the benefits of breastmilk even if he's not nursing so much right now.
Good Luck!

I agree with the PP - it's more likely a nursing strike, as babies don't just wean themselves that young. Keep offering the breast whenever possible.

It's not possible to truly 'self wean' at 5 mos. I would stop any solid foods --5 mos is too young, IMO, to be eating anyway -- and avoid bottlefeeding as well. Offer the boob as often as possible, and he will get back on track.

Good luck.

Always offer to nurse before offering solid foods. Solids are more like practice in the first year and are not as nutritionally complete as milk, so you don't want to displace milk for solids.
