glad you put educational in quotes cause I doubt any major learning is done via a video game (ok to flame away)

That said my 8 year olds favorite Wii games are Wii fit (boxing, skiing, hula hoop and yoga). We are getting him Wii Fit 2 for xmas which has skateboarding and snow boarding too. Wii Sports is a favorite too along with monster trucks, Lego Indiana Jones and Lego Star Wars

He has played Geometry Galaxies, and a few word games for Wii but they never held his interest. We rented Puzzle Quest and again it didn't hold his interest.

My son loves bookworm on the computer, is gifted in math and loves all things math and can do puzzles for hours but has never been interested in anyhting like that on gamecube or Wii. I think Wii is his brain candy the way trashy novels are mine We both limit how much we indulge.

Well, I don't care if a game is educational or not but we are unschoolers and my ds learned how to read by playing video games... so if learning how to read is "education" then video games did something right...

My ds's favourite on the Wii is Zelda Twilight Princess which is a strategy game.

yeah, plants versus zombies is a major strategy game. it might not be chess, but DS certainly has to use his brain power to play it.

i think there is plenty to be learned from playing *any* game... after all, playing equals learning. the quotes were because was thinking "schooly" versus "learning." you can learn something putting the laundry in the drier, but it might not go on your quarterly report, KWIM?

I think they might only be available in Europe and I don't know what they're like but I came across the Clever Kids games while looking for something for my 5.5year old daughter. I'll report back once she's tried one. I've ordered the Creepy Crawlies one.

Just an FYI: The Clever Kids one is available at www.amazon.co.uk .

I haven't found shipping to be too high from Amazon in the UK to the US.

I understand what you mean when you compare trashy novels to video games. But I've picked up quite a bit of historical info lately while reading twaddle-esque novels. I also know several boys who have significantly improved their reading skills by playing video games. Although the boys weren't motivated to read books, they were motiviated to learn to read so that they could play their favorite games independently.

I really like Boom Blox. Don't know anything about the new version though but the original one is very cool. There's even some multiplication hidden away in there.
