WHEELING - It took the strength of two sheriff's deputies to keep a middle schooler still enough to receive a shot of the swine flu, or H1N1, vaccine at a recent clinic.

During a regular Wheeling-Ohio County Health Board meeting Tuesday, health department Administrator Howard Gamble told board members about the student's attempt to flee Wheeling Middle School during a vaccination clinic held there last Friday.

Apparently his mother consented to the shot- she left the school gymnasium (where they were conducting the flu clinic) so she wouldn't have to see him being held down- if she objected to him getting the shot she would have stood up for him- or, more likely, she and the boy wouldn't have been in the gymnasium in the first place.

I don't see what else the people giving the vaccines could have done- mother consents to medical treatment, they do what they have to do to administer it.

I was held down lots of times to get shots when I was a kid. I would run under a desk or table, do anything I could think of to get away, and somebody would always force me out, hold me down, and give the shot.

I turned out ok. Oh, besides the asthma I suffer from. And incapacitating migraine headaches. And the ridiculously unreasonable fear of needles.

NO one knows for sure if the mother consented to the vaccine or not.

This is West Virginia where there are NO religious or philosophical exemptions, so the mother has no legal right to refuse a vaccine that is state mandated for her son.

Poor kid. Hope to see him posting here in a few years.

I was also held down for needles as a child and I have also have issues as a result. I have trypanophobia and I also have panic attacks if I'm held down on my back.

Why anyone would think it's okay to do that to anyone is beyond me.

I was held down for shots and procedures too and it's given me a huge phobia of things being done to me without my consent and lack of trust in my mother.

I'm starting to see a trend here. I was also forced shots as a teenager (held down might be a bit strong) and left to feel there was no other way. I was told I would be kicked out of school and for a straight-A student that lived to pleased, that was just not okay. I put up a good fight though (with no help from my mother), and was still forced to get the shots.

I have serious control issues today and a severe fear of needles. I won't let my DD's be in the room when they need to take blood because I cry uncontrollably and don't want them to 'inherit' my fears.

Actually, she can refuse, but her child would be kicked out and she would have to home school.

At age 12 I was held down in a hospital bed by 2 nurses who pulled my underpants down to stick me with a needle while I was sobbing and begging "NO". (The shot was supposed to sedate me for surgery. )

It was terrifying and humiliating and I had repeated nightmares about it for years. I'm completely phobic now about needles and hospitals. I don't go to the doctor at all unless it's a life or death emergency.

Please remember that any H1N1 specific discussion needs to remain in the threads designated for that purpose listed in our forum announcement.
