Need knitting help with LTK wool soaker

I am knitting a newborn sized Little Turtle Knits Hybrid Rib Soaker and have gotten stuck. When I am supposed to start the 2X2 ribbing that makes up the crotch it says this:

purl 1, purl 2 tog, (knit 2, purl 2) until 6 remain, knit 2, purl 2 tog, purl 2

...and I'm supposed to do this until 3 stitches remain.

Right before these instructions it says that from now on I'm supposed to slip the first stitch of each row to make a selvedge for gussets.

So, when I do this I don't get ribbing, it's all crazy. And if I slip the first stitch of each row won't I just be slipping the same 1 over and over? Do I need to drop the first stitch? And what am I supposed to do on the reverse side? Thus far I have been knitting in the round but at this part in the pattern it says to knit back and forth.

I hope someone here has knit this pattern and can give me a hand.

I've knit this before and didn't have problems and followed like the pattern said.
You will be knitting back and forth not in the round.

You will slip the first st like it says and then continue following the pattern to end up with the 2x2 rib for the crotch area

OK, I figured it out. It was my inexperience at reading patterns that tripped me up. I keep having to remind myself that every word in a pattern means exactly what it means and that I even have to pay attention to the words that I don't think matter.
