Making prefolds

Thread Starter
I am planning on making some prefolds for my new Little one until my one size diapers will fit. My question is, do you think unbleached muslin would work? Also, if you think the muslin would work would you add any thing else? Oh, I have a friend making some newborn wool soakers if that helps.

Also, could you tell me your favorite pattern for prefolds and why it is your favorite?

I do not have any experience with muslin.

I recently found this website with instructions on how to make prefolds. I am going to try and make a few out of a stack of old t-shirts my FIL gave me. Not sure how absorbent they will be, but we are on a super tight budget, so I'm going to give it a shot.

I've been making diapers this week out of white flannel that I already have for the outer layer and then for the middle soaker layer, cut up strips of my husband's old tee shirts. The two outer layers are 18 1/2in. X 13 1/2in. and the inner layers are 5in. X 17 1/2 in. I used 6 layers of tee shirt. They are working great with wool covers. I'm out of flannel though, and I have a coupon for JoAnn's. They have something called diaper cloth and I wonder if this is better or should I just stick with flannel. The price is the same. Any thoughts?

I made t-shirt prefolds recently and it was SO hard to get everything lined up just right. I think this approach only works if your fabric source is free (t-shirts or flannel sheets) . We got very good prices on prefold seconds (little-lions.com) and I don't expect to make any more home made ones.

the fern and faerie pattern is wonderful. i made a bunch of stuffable prefolds and they are my favorite because they don't take foreve rto dry. I did two layers of t-shirt material(literally, old t-shirts) and made doublers out of the sleeves and bottoms. If you buy an old flannel sheet at the thrift store(the bigger the better), that's a ton of material for super cheap and works great for prefolds or for making fitteds(i like the rita's rump pocket pattern. google it). You don't have to be any good at sewing(because I'm not!) for either one and the material is priced perfectly. Only thing is, flannel needs to be pinned. It does not work with a snappi like t-shirts do.
