Making No Soy Tempeh?

Is this possible? My DS has a lot of food allergies and one of them is soy. I love tempeh but obviously he can't have it. I know you can make it at home and would like to try making it.

What can I use to substitute the soy? I was thinking beans. Any ideas on type? Maybe a mix of beans and rice?

No FHE, but I have certainly seen commercial tempeh made with grains and no soy. Good luck!

Any idea what tempeh has no soy? Even the ones I've found that say 3 grain or whatever, have soy in the ingredients.

I don't remember but I'll keep an eye out.
