Anyone heard anything new from the Ukrane? I've heard speculation that it's all being fear mongered about b/c of the political situation over there, but not much beyond.

We're non vaxers and won't be getting this one either. I have a friend that asked how contagious the shots for H1N1 are. Do the shots have a live virus? I didn't get anything when I googled to see if it's live or not. I'm a little out of the loop since it's been awhile since I researched this stuff.

the injected vaccine is a dead virus. The nasal spray is a live attenuated virus.

Whew! The vaccine saved us. Look how fast it worked. And millions of people didn't even get it, which makes it even more impressive. It even works on people who weren't able to get the vaccine. But wanted to. [sarcasm]

H1N1 & Asthma

I've heard so much conflicting information on this...shocker right? I'm somewhere in the middle when it comes to vaxing but I am very against this vaccination...that said, I have a 19 mo daughter who is possibly asthmatic. She's never been officially diagnosed but has had continual respiratory issues. She was hospitalized in November, taken by ambulance because she was in respiratory distress. So, my question is...is she at a higher risk for these sort of complications from H1N1 or is it riskier to vaccinate a possible asthmatic?? She's only had one vaccination in her life, the DTaP.

Any help is appreciated, I need to decide in about 3 1/2 hours.

TIA

In a review of more than 51 studies involving more than 294,000 children it was found there was "no evidence that injecting children 6-24 months of age with a flu shot was any more effective than placebo. In children over 2 yrs, it was only effective 33% of the time in preventing the flu.
Reference: "Vaccines for preventing influenza in healthy children." The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. 2 (2008).

Quote:
The inactivated flu vaccine, Flumist, does not prevent influenza-related hospitalizations in children, especially the ones with asthma…In fact, children who get the flu vaccine are more at risk for hospitalization than children who do not get the vaccine."
Reference: The American Thoracic Society’s 105th International Conference, May 15-20, 2009, San Diego.

A study 800 children with asthma, where one half were vaccinated and the other half did not receive the influenza vaccine. The two groups were compared with respect to clinic visits, emergency department (ED) visits, and hospitalizations for asthma. CONCLUSION: This study failed to provide evidence that the influenza vaccine prevents pediatric asthma exacerbations. These are for the regular flu shot, but I see no reason why it would be different for the h1n1 shot.

Hi, here is a link to the inserts for each vaccine for H1N1. Read through them. From what I remember, the spray should not be given to asthmatics, because it's inhaled right to the lungs. You might want to hop over to the main h1n1 thread-there was an article posted yesterday I think that is worth reading.
You do sound like you don't want the vax at all. Trust your instincts momma.

The flu can be very problematic for people with asthma. I know because I have asthma and it put me in the ICU.

But that being said, I would never in a million years get the flu vax or H1N1 vax for myself, my asthmatic 2 year old, or my asthmatic husband.

Like a PP posted, the vaccine can make it worse for asthmatics. Plus these vaxes have mercury in them. Since your child is asthmatic there are allergies here and you may never know what is in the vaccine that could trigger a serious allergic reaction.

It's not worth the risk, IMO.

Jenelle - I laughed out loud when I read your post "Aaaaaaggggghhhhhh! Everybody panic! Run out and get your kleenexes!" That wasn't my intent - I just think the site is a good learning tool for children, but maybe the "flu tracker" could get a dose of positivity in it, haha.

My mother is a 3rd grade teacher in Hampton roads, va and right now is at high risk for h1n1. The state ran out of the vaccine and it never got distributed to her school district. The next week, her school had the highest amount of children out sick w/ h1n1. Let's just hope this passes by us quickly! I take public transportation everyday so yes, Jenelle, I'll be running around with a Kleenex this winter

I knew it wasn't YOUR intention, I just thought it was that the map on their website was so doom-and-gloom. I think it is easier for me to be sarcastic about it because I live in an area where H1N1 has NOT been rampant -- in fact we don't know anyone personally, who has had it or even been suspected of having it. I'm sorry your area is being hit so hard.

I would not vaccinate her with anything especially since she has asthma already which my have come from the DTaP vaccine itself. Did you ever read the book Shot in the Dark by H. Coulter? Maybe you could.

No vaccine is ever tested on children with asthma. I wonder why? They may show that kids with asthma do much worse after getting vaccinate. Who knows?

I have just lately read that a fresh glass of carrot juice every day in the morning is supposed to help very much in dealing with asthma. It's called the Gerson method.

We have actually started to drink one glass every morning. My grandchildren love it with a wee bit of Stevia in it.

My dd who has asthma had H1N1 and didnt even wheeze once thank the Lord.

I'm very glad to see this thread.

My son has asthma, but he's never had a full-blown attack. Mostly he gets very chesty and the barky cough whenever anything respiratory is going on. Sometimes it's exercise induced.

I don't feel good about the H1N1 vax, though I have delayed and selectively vaxxed for other things. It makes me very nervous that (at least here in Canada) they have changed the guidelines for children so many times. First it was two shots, then one, then adjuvanted vs. non-adjuvanted...they changed a number of things over the course of just a few weeks. Also, my kids are generally very healthy- they don't even usually get colds. I don't like to mess with a strong immune system, kwim?

My son though was the one I was concerned about...and no one could tell me about the risks for an asthmatic...which made me nervous. So, in the meanwhile I've decided to trust my instincts and leave things be, for my son and all of us in general.

Flu pandemic could be mild

Reeeally??

"With the second wave of H1N1 infections having crested in the United States, leading epidemiologists are predicting that the pandemic could end up ranking as the mildest since modern medicine began documenting influenza outbreaks."

I really love this line:

"Public health officials worry that people may become complacent about getting vaccinated, which could prove disastrous if a third wave of infections swells later this winter or the virus mutates into a more dangerous form."

Just how does a vaccine help against a mutated form of the virus???

Exactly!! I was thinking that exact thing when I read about this yesterday.

I thought this was interesting.

Canadians think H1N1 risks exaggerated: poll
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2009/...ekos-poll.html

The table at the bottom shows that 56% of those that thought the risk was exaggerated were University Educated.
