Target calls. the. cops. on a nursing mom. - Page 5

i dont really care what it escalated to... they should have never been approached in the first place!

if the security guard would have left them alone (per the law) the situation would have never happened.

This is it exactly. :-)

"I was very discreet. She’s my 3rd child and I breastfed the other 2 until they were 2, I know how to be discreet. LOL If you can watch the news clip, I was nursing then and I imagine that’s as much skin as I showed in the store…none.

I spoke with [Target] corporate yesterday [Dec. 2]. I received an apology and admission of wrong doing, and that no one complained. I want an amended press release, removing the part that reads that anything escalated and that they were concerned about the safety of their other customers. …Until then, this story is to be continued."

Jessica, thanks so much for posting this!

And I'm going to preemptively remind everyone that discussing the blog post is fine; discussing the comments is not. I've already mentioned this several times on the thread, but am mentioning it again since a new link has been posted.

I beg to disagree. They were certainly within their rights to defend themselves. What if no woman made a "scene" and demanded the right to vote? If no one ever made a scene we wouldn't have the breastfeeding laws that we do have, toothless as they are.

Not everyone on MDC is a pacifist, and we shouldn't judge anyone for not being one.

In my eyes, breastfeeding discrimination is identical to sex discrimination. If someone asked my DD to leave some place because she's a girl, you darn well better believe that I will fight, hard and LOUD. This family was protecting the rights of their infant child, and the mother's right as a woman. If in fact the parents caused an escalation, and we don't have the facts on that, then more power to them, and fight on.

Target tried to kick me out for breastfeeding my 3month old in the lingerie department recently.... here's the link. http://wcco.com/local/target.breast....2.1127948.html This really hits close to home for me. They need to have an educational campaign for their employees about this!

Also, if the family did cause a scene, then there would have been an arrest or something for disorderly conduct.... as it stands the cops simply cleared up the legality of NIP and left. No arrests or citations were made.

This is 100% the security guard's fault. He does not have the authority to enforce "the law"- the one that doesn't exsist. Even if it did exsist, he is a civilian. The father knew this.

I cried when I read this outloud to SO. I can't imagine.

I am so sorry the Martinez family had to experience that.

I had that happen to me in Toys R US in Manhattan and it was awful. My husband was not with me and the security guard was very helpful when I asked where I could nurse. He directed me to a private level and while there, a Toys R US employee, I think she was in charge of Personal Shopping or something, forced me to to nurse my infant in the bathroom with my toddler in tow. It was a horrible experience and she used shame and threats as her primary motivator. I wonder about her every now and then. I wonder if she ever felt bad for how she treated another woman looking for a private place to nurse. I have never shopped at Toys R Us since then and I have four children now. They lost my business at that moment.

Ugh. I think if someone tried to force me to nurse in a bathroom I would just whip it out and be as non-discreet as I could. Ok maybe not, but BOY would I be ticked off! I'm sorry that happened to you hotmamacita!

No freaking way would someone make me nurse in a bathroom. No way. They may tell me to go to the bathroom, they may object to my nursing, they may even try to bully, manipulate and scare me. I would probably shake and cry.....but i would not go. They really would have to call the police to make me leave. But there is no way on this planet I would nurse in a bathroom. I hate confrontation. I hate the way that I allow some people to treat me all in the interest of keeping peace and not causing a fuss.....but if some store employee tried to stuff me in the bathroom to feed my child.....you can bet there would be smoke in the city.
