Decembre 2009 Book Challenge - Page 6

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

I got The Girl Who Played With Fire for xmas and found out it was a sequel so I had to go get this one to read first. It took me a little bit to get into this . . . I think mostly because I'm not so much a thriller reader--plus the translation made for some bad writing in spots . . . the last half got very exciting however and I enjoyed it.

Angels of Destruction, Donohue

Really, really interesting take on angels -- arriving when we most need them, but not necessarily doing exactly what we expect. Ending could've been better, but overall I really liked it.

Quote:
tells the story of Norah, a nine-year-old who appears on the doorstep of Margaret Quinn, a widow living a solitary existence in a small Pennsylvania town in 1985. Margaret eagerly takes in Norah to make up for the loss of her own daughter, Erica, who disappeared 10 years earlier after running away to join the Angels of Destruction, a West Coast revolutionary group...unexplained origins form the enigmatic core of this story, and though she comes across as more of a novelistic conceit than a flesh and blood character, the novel movingly illustrates the quest for connection hardwired into every human heart.

#142 Leviathan by Scott Westerfield
by the author of the Uglies series. (which I haven't read). I liked this more than I thought I would. alternate history of WWI (the very beginning of it). Steampunk. Going to be a second, I'll probably read it.

ending the year on a high note:
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is so good. really, really good. it will be hard to choose my next book. i resisted reading it (nazis=blech). but as i read....somewhere....it is not about WWII, it is about the power of words.

115. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

I wanted to see what all the fuss is about. I'm not sure yet if I liked this enough to read the rest of the series. It was very engrossing, though.

#24 - So Long, See You Tomorrow by William Maxwell

The narrator recalls a murder that took place in his town when he was a boy, a murder committed by the father of a boy he knew. He tells a bit about the sad part of his own childhood, then imagines the events that led up to the murder, from the points of view of the various people involved. I didn't love it, but I liked it.

#25 - Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card

The sequel to Ender's Game. I enjoyed it, but also found it annoying in some ways. For instance, there's this big mystery about the behavior of the creatures called "piggies" that the people in the book don't figure out until nearly the end, even though it's pretty obvious to the reader right from the start. It's not believable that they have such a hard time seeing what's going on - and there are a lot of other things about people's motives and behavior that aren't believable, not to mention an important premise that was too biologically implausible for me.

Well, first things first: January 2010's Thread (can you believe a whole year has passed already?) can be found HERE and is up and running.

Second, I have three last minute books to post, oddly enough, all three have a Pacific Northwest theme to them.

Thirdly, with these final three I'll have read 75 books this year, well short of my stated goal of 105. *sigh*

We LOVE the Wheedle on the Needle!

And as far as your goal goes, it's not like you didn't have anything going on this year or anything.

2010 is going to be quite a year for us all I think!

Yeah, that's happening to me too. Pretty fun right? I forgot my password!

We've been reading the Austere Academy at bedtime instead of listening to this one. My five year old even asked when the "other guy" is going to read the books again. I think it's the next one? The Ersatz Elevator

It has finally resolved itself for me in the last day or two.
