How to keep a hat on a baby in the ergo

I wasn't sure where to post this, but I thought it would get more traffic here.

I have an 8 month old and we live in upstate NY Every morning, and most afternoons, we go on a long walk with the dog outside. I wear my babe on my back in the ergo, as he's too big to be worn comfortably on the front anymore (he's 23 lbs, and more than 15 mins front wearing kills my back). We both love the ergo, and it allows me to give my pup more leeway on the leash than I would if I was struggling with a stroller. However, I cannot keep a hat on the baby when he's in the ergo. After losing 2 hats on our walks, I finally tied a hat to the ergo strap so I wouldn't lose it, but it still falls off his head. Now that it's below freezing here, there's no way we can go for walks with no hat on. In the stroller, he's warm and the hat stays on fine, but ugh, I don't like using the stroller! Has anyone encountered this? Any suggestions/specific hat recommendations? Our walks are important to all of us, especially my pup, so we really need to figure something out! TIA

Have you tried using one of those hats that ties or snaps/buttons under the chin? Would those stay on better? I believe they even make hats/hoods that go all the way over the head and have fabric at the shoulder so the hat goes under the coat/shirt... I cannot think of what they are called right now, though.

We've always used the hats which velcro/snap under the chin. At 2.5, he's starting to resist those, but he's also better about keeping hats on.

Here's last year's hat:

I bought it at Target.

I have the same problem!!! And the chin strap just slows ds down from taking it off - but he still manages it. I have found putting a toque on & then pulling his hood up & zipping his jacket the whole way is the most effective - he can't seem to get the hood off (as long as the jacket is zipped all. the. way.)

I wanted to add that the first time we had a really cold day & ds kept dropping his hat I was downtown Ottawa. I kept stopping perfect strangers & asking them to put his hat back on him. I felt like the most incompetent mother ever!

Another company with a balaclava style is nova naturals. I just got 7 mo old DS one (in size 1-2, by the way).
