How Do You Store.....

your home baked bread?

I've decided that prices for vegan whole grain bread are just getting out of hand for us, and have started baking our own. I baked two pretty loaves last night and now am wondering what the best way to store them is.

We don't use any plastic or "ziplock" containers.

Any and all ideas welcomed!

TIA!

A wooden bread box.

I've heard of people making cloth bread bags with just a cheap piece of cotton fabric.

I use the Debbie Meyer bread bags because they are large enough to fit my loaves and they are reusable whereas the ziplocks seem to get gross inside even if I try to wash them.

I depends on how you want the crust to stay- some breads will get soft and loose their hard crust in plastic while others dry out too much when just put in cloth or a wood box. Are you looking for long-term storage or are you making just what you will eat within a few days?

Well, I suppose to bake ahead would be a good idea for those weeks I'm on call quite a bit. I would love to freeze some, and keep a loaf or two out for use. The recipe I'm using yields 2 loaves.

I was thinking of sewing a couple bags for this purpose. Wondering if there is some fabric that would better keep the air out.

it's your call as far as fabric- using 100% unbleached cotton and or hemp would be the most natural but they will not keep much moisture out- going with a more dense fabric (non-organic) opens it up to unnatural fabric and it that case I see very little difference then using a plastic bag-
also wool would be very dense but perhaps too much and not allow enough circulation?

I've got some natural cotton, and was thinking perhaps a cotton bag in a wooden box!

Thanks for all of your suggestions!

That just sounds so good and earthy. I love it.
