Congestion

Hi...
does anyone have any ideas how to help clear congestion in an infant? My dd is 8 mos old and is super-congested. It makes nursing tough. I have tried: breastmilk in her nose, Little Noses Saline drops, eucaliptus vapor rub on her chest, streamy showers, and trying to pull the snot out with the bulb.
It is thick and we are going on day 6 here!

My first thought is that maybe your lo is allergic to something you are eating: http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns...nsitivity.html

HTH!!!

poor baby! i was going to suggest all of the things you already tried. i don't know how comfortable you feel about this, but you could probably call your doctor and see if you can give your LO a little Benadryl?

Could you try to teach her to blow her nose? I taught DS around 12 mos to do that and it has really helped when he gets a stuffy nose!

Hmmm.... how did you teach your lo to blow his nose? That's a good idea. Getting her to laugh works too... she kinda snorts. lol

My LO is sick now too and we got this thing called the nosefrida at Whole Foods and it works wonders. So much better than the bulb.

I started doing it in front of the mirror, I would just model it for him (scrunching up my nose, kind of like you would do a "piggy" noise) and he would do it back, then I started doing it with a tissue. Once he got it, he GOT IT. Now whenever he sees a tissue or toilet paper or napkin laying around he will pick it up and blow his nose into it.

Make an appointment with a Cranial Sacral therapist. The work they do is amazing and it will help your child more than you can imagine. You will be so happy!

Just curious - with cranial sacral therapy, if it works and helps resolve the problem, do you have to keep going back to maintain that success? Or you just go once or twice and you're done, problem usually solved?

Good question. It depends on what is causing your child's congestion. You probably will only have to go a couple times (maybe once) before you see results and relief for your LO. The information you will receive about your child is amazing (in my opinion) and you will want the therapist in your life as your child grows. Chances are you will encounter many health issues along the way that cranial therapy will be able to help with.

nose blowing- I used a birthday candle and had them "blow out the candle" with their nose. But neither girl had a cold when I taught them... it was more an "in preparation" thing.
