I need a little hlep on my thesis statement. The paper has to be a persuasive.

I do not plan on talking about UA home births, but midwife assisted. I want to discuss it be a safe alternative, that should be encouraged, and finacially supported through insurance companies.

Here is my thesis statement:

Birthing at home is a safe option and should be encouraged as a cost effective measure in normal birthing.

Sounds awesome! Hmm I wouldn't say birthing twice in the same sentence, and I don't know about "measure"...and maybe more specificity by avoiding the passive? Who are you trying to convince supposedly or actually? To do what exactly? General public to be activists about this? Insurance co's to cover it? Politicians?

With what you've got I'd tweak it to:
Birthing at home is a safe and cost effective option that insurance companies [and the health care system?] should encourage and support.

Oooh, this is an exciting topic! Glad you're doing this - the more out there supporting home birth, the better.

You could even specify in your thesis statement that you're talking about "midwife-attended home birth" in order to clarify.

If you ever need interview subjects, I'm sure a lot of us here would volunteer! I'm planning a home birth for January and assuming it's successful I will be able to compare the hospital vs. home birth experiences.

Great topic! Good luck with your paper, it sounds like it'll be great. If you need help finding resources, this is a great board to get those too.

One good book that I've found that you might want to hunt down is Marjorie Tew's Safer Childbirth? I think it's out of print; I found it online at a used bookstore. It's really academic in tone, traces lots of studies about the whole process of the medicalization of birth. It's focused on the UK, but her studies are good. I recommend it for a good academic perspective on the topic.

So glad to see someone else thinking and writing about this, and especially making the financial argument for HB. Not that money should be our #1 concern here, far from it, but unfortunately that is the only argument that reaches some people, and with homebirth, encouraging women's choices and saving money seems to line up quite well.

I just out together an email of resources for my inlaws in you are interested - PM me if you are!

If you need resources, you should check out the recent study "Evidence based maternity care".

The Washington State Department of Health commissioned and published a study about the safety and cost-effectiveness of midwife-attended births. This is a great document to look at for this kind of paper, because it has actual $ figures.
