The line between protecting our house and scaring people

We have a 3yr old lab/beagle mix, who barks a good bark, but has been known to scare people. In some ways, i want her to protect us, and in another, I don't think I want people to be scared of her. SHe is very sweet and would never do more than bark. I keep her in a room or away from people, when i am expecting guests, but today we had a delivery and I wasn't about to keep her locked up all day.

Any insights?

I like mine to bark it up.I secure the dogs before I open the door. Train the
dog to be quiet/sit on command might be what you are looking for.

We are really trying to work on this too. We have two BIG dogs that people get scared of because of their size. I put them up before people come over, but for unexpected deliveries, etc...I pop them in their crate.
