How cold is too cold to take LO on a walk?

I'm a No. California transplant to New Mexico so freezing temps are new for me as are how to keep a baby warm when its really cold.
DD(4 mos.) and I take a walk every AM during her morning nap. Yest. & today, temps were 32 and sunny when we walked. She wears a cotton layer, a fleece full body suit, fleece jacket, booties, hat and baby legs legwarmers to ensure no gaps. She's then in the ergo with the hood up and my warm jacket around the carrier.
I asked her ped what was too cold and she just said not to walk at 7AM when its 20 degrees out but nothing else.
When we got home and changed her today every part of her felt warm.
So I wonder when do you all declare its too cold for a walk with you LOs?
I haven't taken her out when it snowed once and I stay away from ice of course but would love to keep walking. Thanks!

I would say that if it reaches below 0 then it might be too cold. I live in NY and we've been taking pretty regular walks. I just bundle him up in a fleece suit and put a hat on under his hood!

I just moved to Fairbanks, Alaska and we take walks whenever it's sunny and the temperature is in the positive numbers. My DD is 3 months old. We use a babywearing coat and she wears her regular clothes with some fleece pants (with footies) and a hat. But she's in the Moby, against me, and under the coat. It looks like our high on Sunday (our last walk) was 3.

As long as your baby is warm when you come in, she's fine. The only other thing I would question is whether her face could get cold or if she was breathing dangerously cold air, but I doubt New Mexico is getting that cold. I'm sure your fine.

Enjoy your walks! They're probably good for both of you.

-50? Seriously. We lived in the arctic until dd was 6 months old, and she was born in December. You just have to dress appropriately. We actually only did undershirt, babylegs, wool socks and winter robeez, normal clothes, hat and then hooded fleece suit if she was being worn (in a wrap under my winter jacket), or snowsuit if she was in the Chariot (I also put a hot water bottle in the bottom and two blankets over her). My Norwegian family says that there's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes. I go a little nuts if I have to stay indoors, so we go out! I've found the only problem areas to be feet. Even in -40C.
Enjoy your time outside!

which part of NM are you in? Where I am - today would have been fine, for me, to go on a walk with a LO. Last night's temp? I'm too wussy for that! But really, since you are using an Ergo you have the benefit of your body heat to keep him warm.

Coming from cold winters in Colorado, I think as long as I was comfortable, baby would be, too. It doesn't get near as cold here, even at it's coldest.

Thanks for all the good info!
I'm in Albuquerque so its a more temperate part of NM- it felt ok yest and today but the wind picked up at the end.
I use the ergo hood over her hat and then my jacket goes on either side of this so I'm trying to keep the air she gets in there toasty.

Selkat: "My Norwegian family says that there's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes."
I love this!

I'm in Rio Rancho - so we get quite a bit of chilly wind up here.

I think the coldest time is January - but even then it's not too bad. I'm sure your LO will let you know if she is uncomfy. (and sorry, I said him in my other response )

It's not so much temperature than it is wind. If it's just cold, it'd have to be getting down to ten below zero before I'd start worrying about bringing an infant outside if I didn't need to. But if it were 15 above and windy, I'd be more concerned, though it's still possible to do it if properly dressed. Maybe not as enjoyable, though.

I used to walk with my DS in AK when it was 15 degrees. I wouldn't go out if it was colder than that. He was in an outfit, fleece suit and then zipped inside my coat in a Moby. He was always perfectly fine and mostly slept for the entire walk.

Selkat - I love that - "no bad weather only bad clothes"!!! I firmly believe that so many people fear/dislike inclement weather because they just don't have (or perhaps just don't wear) the appropriate clothing for it. If you dress right there is very few days that are truly too bad to go out in.

I used to live in Fairbanks, and my cut off was also 0 F. I made sure to dress baby a little warmer than myself. If it was windy, humid or if my baby cried a lot we called it off. So yeah, like everyone said, if you have the right clothes, you have nothing to worry about in NM! Walking as often as possible is the only way I can get through the winter. I do not do well without daily outdoor light and my children do much better with daily outdoor time as well.
