Yes I've recieved 'holiday assistance' before and it was wonderful. I didn't really ask for specific things and was just happy for the help. (I am a bit more mainstream then many on here) I think the year DS was 4 we recieved help and it really made his holiday. DS recieved some wonderful toys (mainstream, plastic stuff) that I wouldnt have been able to get him and they gave me an overflowing box of groceries. l also qualified for something the year DS was 7 and recieved 2 toys for him and they agency paid my electric bill. Last year the same agency did the same thing 2 toys but since I no longer had my own place (roomate situation) and dont have utilities I was able to get a gift card to a local drug store since one of my rx is not covered under our state insurance plan. This year I didnt sign up for the program even though we more than qualified. I felt like it was someone elses turn.
I never thought the donated presents overshadowed the gifts I got for DS. But I would never not give him something, espically a donated present that could be going to another needy family. That just wouldnt be right IMO. (unless of course it was totally against my beliefs but they usually give generic toys and make sure there are no weapons etc)
