lame news article

From the front page of abc news today. Takes great pains to explain that it's co-sleeping that kills babies, not breastfeeding. Ugh!

Well, this particular mother was in a chair... not a safe bedsharing environment. If this child was indeed suffocated, it is a good example of why we need more information about safe co-sleeping.

ETA: Someone in the article mentioned mom's covering, I couldn't tell if this one was or not but that is something else I think is worth talking about.

Lawrence suggests that in an attempt to cover themselves in public while nursing, mothers can accidentally cover the baby's head and suffocate it.

did anyone catch that part? maybe they should focus a little mor eattention on that since all those offended by nip want us to cover our children up with a blanket. regardless of the cause of death...that poor poor mother! and why is it that co-sleeping is being lumped in with nursing sitting in a seat? aren't they technically different things? i think it's jkust another way for them to tell us how dangerous co-sleeping is.

Wow, that seriously is one of the STUPIDEST articles I've ever read! I assume she was covering up, which is absolutely the issue! I've never been comfortable covering my baby's head while she's eating (or any other time, I'm paranoid about where her fresh air is coming from when she's in the Moby wrap.)

Wow... I don't even know what to say to that.

Even more ironic, the "related article" is about Breastfeeding benefits being exaggerated (http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=7424844&page=1) so I guess we all better stop BF'ing AND co-sleeping and everything will be just peachy... but wait, the Stork cribs are recalled and the Amby hammock killed 2 kids and formula contains melamine....

Just makes me want to stop reading news stories completely.

What exactly was she supposed to do with the baby when she slept? Stick it under the seat?

This is exactly why I don't watch the news or read the paper. It seems like every time I turn on the news, I see another story about a baby/child who was hurt due to parental stupidity or just a freak accident. If I watched every story, I probably would have my kid living in a bubble in a padded room with no toys except feathers.

I just noticed this statement in the article:
"But while breastfeeding and pediatric health organizations such as the March of Dimes, La Leche League International, and the World Health Organization have guidelines warning mothers about the dangers of co-sleeping, none of these guidelines specifically address concerns over falling asleep while nursing. "

That makes it sound like those groups are anti-co-sleeping. La Leche League is not against co-sleeping! They do issue guidelines about how to do it safely - just like every other pro-co-sleeping group.
