Upset tummy

What's been your experience with your EBF babes with an upset tummy? How long is normal for it to run it's course and get back to normal? Ds is EBF and not on solids yet. He's hydrated and not running fever, but has had upset tumm for 10 days now. He's on pro-bs that seem to be helping. I'd appreciate hearing what you've noticed.

bump ... please can someone tell me how long babies typically have diarrhea for? It's been 11 days now and while Ds is acting much more normal today, he still has yucky stinky diarrhea, despite pro-b. (It's a little better today, but still surprising me.) Should I be worried or take him to the ped? My 7 yo dd and I now have D too, but it's passing much more quicly than my baby's. Sorry to repost, but I really want to know how concerned I should be. Does it usually take babies a while to recover?

TIA

I think 11 days of diarrhea is an indicator of a bigger problem. If it were me, I'd take the LO to the ped. Diarrhea can become dangerous in an infant rather quickly b/c of dehydration/electrolyte imbalance. It could be an indicator of any number of things - flu, rotavirus, food allergy, reaction to a medication or vax - it's hard to know without checking it out. But 11 days is, IMO, long enough to wait - I'd call the doc.

I would agree 11 days of diarrhea is no good. Is it really diarrhea? I know in EBF babies it can be hard to tell. But if you and DD have it too you probably have the flu. I would like to say just make sure you get plenty of fluids and rest, but with babies... you can't be too cautious. I would see a DR just to be sure. If they try to have you give him that electrolight crap I personally wouldn't give it. I would just BF all day.

Thanks Mamas! I took Ds to doc today and he said he thought it was a virus but that he looks great. (Today he had a hive-like rash on his back during the exam ... indicative of virus.) Doc said the virus is probably already out of his system, just that his body is still trying to get back to normal and that's why he's still got mucky poops. He said that can take a while.

Thanks for your replies to me!!!!

I would actually guess that it is a food allergy from what you are eating. I actually would bet tons of money on it.... doean't sound like a virus to me, nor does a hive like rash on a babies back even though the virus is gone???? A hive like rash is very indicative of a food allergy though.

When DD had rotavirus, it took a long time for her poop to get back to normal, even after she was clearly on the mend. I looked for continuous, albeit slow, improvement.

BTW, I apologize for posting health stuff in this forum, but I just wanted to find out how long baby's D normally lasts and thought this forum would be best to reply since we all have bubbas.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. My Dd and I have had D this week but MUCH quicker passing than Ds, but doc said that's b/c his system is still developing. He had violent explosive poops (nasty smell) for one day, then nasty poop for a few days and now slowly it's changing back. I am very conscious to watch for changes in my diet. In fact Ds is sensitive when I drink milk, he spits up so I avoid dairy. I'm also Gluten intolerant and never eat any wheat or gluten.

Tanya~ How long did it take for your DD to get better... you talking weeks? Ds did not get rotateq vax and got D 3 days after I took him to my dd's school (germy kids eveywhere). I wore Ds but still kids grabbed his hands so I wonder if it was rotavirus b/c of this exposure (plus he was rather pukey and miserabe when it began). How did you know it was rotaV? Just curious.
